Focus Description:

For the trick, you need 24 matches, which are stacked next to three small objects, say, a coin, a ring and a key. Three spectators are asked to take part in the focus (we will call them conditionally 1, 2, 3). The first spectator receives one match, the second - two, the third - three. You turn your back on them and ask each of them to take a little thing from those lying on the table (let's call them A, B and C).

Now invite the spectator holding object A to take exactly as many matches from among those left in the pile as he has in his hands. The spectator who took B, let him take twice as many matches as he has in his hands. Ask the last spectator to take object B to take four times as many matches as he has in his hands. After that, have all three spectators put their objects and matches in their pockets.

Turning to the audience and looking at the remaining matches, you immediately tell each spectator what item he took.

Focus secret:

If there is only one match left, then spectators 1, 2, and 3 took objects A, B, and C, respectively (in that order).

If there are 2 matches left, then the order of the items will be B, A, C.

If there are 3 matches left, then A, C, B.

If there are 4 matches, then someone made a mistake, since such a remainder is impossible.

If 5, then the order of the items will be B, C, A.

If 6, then C, A, B.

If 7, then C, B, A.

The mathematical essence of this trick is the fact that the sum 2q + 5r + 1s gets six different values when q, r, s take on the values 2, 3, XNUMX, or some permutation of them.

By the way, coefficients 2, 3, 5 are not the least possible in this trick. It would be possible to use with the same success, for example, coefficients 1, 3, 4 (A does not take matches at all, B takes twice as much as he has in his hands, C - three times as much); in this case, all the sums do not exceed 19, i.e., we can limit ourselves to 19 matches).

A convenient mnemonic would be a list of words whose consonants (in the order in which they are written) correspond to the initial letters of the names of the three selected items. So, for example, if you show a trick with a spoon, fork and knife, then you can offer the following list of words:

1. L and V e N.

2. L e N i V e c.

3. V o L a N.

5. V a N i L.

6. N e V o L i.

7. N a L and V k a.

Here the letter "L" should denote a spoon, "B" - a fork, "H" - a knife. Letters are arranged in words in the order corresponding to the order of objects. The numbers in front of the words indicate the number of matches left.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Found a way to hear the fish inside the aquarium 31.01.2018

Physicists from Japan and South Korea have developed a metamaterial that transmits about 30 percent of the energy of sound waves.

The new metamaterial will make it possible to use sensitive condenser microphones for recording underwater sounds and significantly increase the quality of such recordings.

If the fish were constantly screaming, then people would still not notice it - 99,9 percent of the energy of sound waves is lost when passing through the water-air border. The metamaterial significantly reduces these losses: when using it, about a third of the wave energy passes through the interface. With it, conventional air microphones can be used to record underwater sounds. In this way it will be possible to hear the sounds inside the aquarium.

The fact is that the water-air interface transmits sound very poorly. The acoustic resistance of water is 3600 times greater than that of air, and therefore the energy of a sound wave when passing through their border decreases by almost three orders of magnitude. This is easy to check for yourself by tapping, for example, with two stones in the air and under water - if you hear how the stones click when hit in the water, the sound will reach your ears through your hands and body rather than through water and air.
