Who came up with the theory of relativity?

No, it wasn't Einstein. The theory of relativity was first stated by Galileo Galilei in his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief Systems of the World in 1632.

To understand the theory of relativity, the first step is to understand the theory it has replaced. We are talking about the theory of "absolute rest", postulated by Aristotle in the IV century BC. e. According to Aristotle's version, rest is the natural state of any body, and, left to itself, the body will certainly return to this natural state.

The theory of relativity states that all bodies are in motion relative to each other and that the definition of a body as being "at rest" is pure convention. It follows from this that the speed of this or that body cannot be expressed as absolute - only as "relative" to something else.

The Italian astronomer and philosopher Galileo Galilei was also one of the founders of modern physics. He is best known as the man who supported the theory of Copernicus (or Aristarchus) that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

The Catholic Church considered the hypothesis heretical and subjected the scientist to the court of the Inquisition. However, Galileo did not at all rot in a casemate infested with rats for his principles. He served his sentence in the luxurious home of the Archbishop of Siena, after which Galileo was allowed to return under comfortable house arrest to his villa near Florence. It was only in 1992 that the Church officially admitted that it was sort of mistaken about Galileo and that the scientist's views on the structure of the solar system were still correct.

In this matter, Galileo really turned out to be right, but even such a person as he was by no means immune from mistakes. So, Galileo's favorite argument, confirming the rotation of the Earth, was that it was this movement that caused the tides to ebb and flow. Galileo noticed that the Mediterranean Sea was much more tidal than the Red Sea and attributed this to the "sloshing" of the water caused by the Earth's rotation, which he said was stronger in the case of the Mediterranean Sea because it was oriented east to west.

Galileo's arguments were completely refuted by the testimony of direct eyewitnesses - sailors who claimed that the tides occur twice a day, and not once, as Galileo assumed. The scientist refused to believe in "such nonsense."

Albert Einstein understood that Galileo also made a mistake in his theory of relativity - more precisely, that the theory "fell apart" in exceptional circumstances.

Einstein's work "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies", published in 1905, was the first to talk about the "special theory of relativity", which described the unusual properties of particles moving in vacuum at a speed close to the speed of light.

The "general theory of relativity", which imposes the principles of special theory on large-scale phenomena like the force of gravity, was published ten years later - in 1915.

Which ambassador played a prank on journalists by reporting on the combat use of nuclear weapons?

On March 20, 2003, the operation of American troops in Iraq began. On April 1, Iraqi Ambassador to Russia Abbas Khalaf Kunfud convened a press conference and read to reporters what he had just received from Reuters: "The Americans mistakenly hit British troops with a nuclear missile. Seven died." And after a few seconds, in complete silence, he declared to the shocked audience: "Happy April XNUMX!".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Pesticides kill bees 18.04.2012

Scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health claim that the global extinction of bees in recent years is due to the use of a widely used pesticide called imidacloprid. The author of the article, Professor Alex Liu, is confident that his group has found "compelling evidence" linking imidacloprid and the hitherto unexplained disappearance of bees from hives.

It all started in 2006 in the USA, when local beekeepers began to state with horror that their bees, once again leaving their hive, did not return back. The bee pandemic affected more than just honey production, because bees pollinate about a third of plants of interest to humans, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and livestock food such as alfalfa and clover. According to experts, the massive loss of honey bees could lead to multi-billion dollar losses.

Bees can be exposed in two ways - through the nectar of plants or the food given to them by beekeepers. Among the prime suspects was imidacloprid. In the summer of 2010, the researchers began a 23-week trial in four different bee farms - three hives in each of them were exposed to high concentrations of imidacloprid, and the fourth, the control hive, was carefully protected from this "gift". After 12 weeks all bees were alive. But after 23 weeks, 94% of the exposed hives had died. The control hives survived completely.

The results of the study are consistent in nature with data on the phenomenon of the disappearance of bees, called CCD - Colony Collapse Disorder. Under CCD, the hives were empty everywhere except where food was stored; very few dead bees were found nearby. In any other circumstance - an insect infestation or a sudden infectious disease - dead bees are usually found either in or near the hives. Here they just fly away and die.
