Dogwood blood red (blood red dogwood, blood red dogwood, bloody dogwood)

The specific epithet was given to this species not for the color of the shoots (they are most often green, unlike the white dogwood - Cornus alba, which has red shoots), but for the color of the leaves in autumn - they are blood red.

Deciduous shrub up to 4 m tall, with a strongly branched crown and drooping shoots of different colors - from green (most often in young shoots) to brown and red (darken with age). Shoots are bare, covered with clearly protruding lenticels.

The leaves are opposite, ovate, 5-10 cm long, green in spring and summer, with small hairs, light green or whitish below from dense pubescence, blood-red in autumn (hence the name).

Corymbose inflorescences up to 7 cm in diameter, fluffy, from 50-70 small, flat, dull white flowers up to 5 mm in diameter. The duration of flowering is 15-20 days. The shrub grows very quickly - the annual growth can be 60 cm in height and 60 cm in crown width. Winter hardiness is average, in winter it partially freezes over.

The fruits are berry-like false juicy drupes, black or blue-black in color, numerous, round, the size of a pea (5-8 mm), slightly pubescent, outwardly similar to the fruits of chokeberry (chokeberry).

Distributed in Western and Eastern Europe, in the Baltic countries.

It grows in the undergrowth of light deciduous and mixed forests, in thickets of shrubs, along the banks of rivers and lakes.

The fruits of red svidina are inedible for humans.

Dogwood blood red (blood red dogwood, blood red dogwood, bloody dogwood)

Blood red dogwood is a very decorative shrub, so it is very popular with gardeners. Most often in summer cottages you can see white svidina (with red shoots and white fruits), however, red turf also deserves attention. The plant is used both in group plantings and as a tapeworm; plant it in hedges, on the edges, to create an undergrowth.

Blood red dogwood is a shade-tolerant plant, but the degree of shading must be taken into account based on the variety. Variegated varieties are best planted in the sun or in partial shade. In general, derain is undemanding to the composition of soils, prefers acidified substrates; unpretentious, quickly adapts. It is drought tolerant, but thrives best in moist soils.

It does not need special care, it is unpretentious and adapts well. It is recommended to prune in autumn or early spring.

Red svidina is propagated vegetatively by root and lignified cuttings (in spring). But it is best propagated by green cuttings (cuttings are carried out in the first half of June). Cuttings are planted in cold greenhouses, where by autumn they form a powerful root system. For the winter, cuttings should be taken to the basement or to a heated greenhouse.

Dogwood blood red - a plant resistant to diseases and pests. But sometimes its young shoots can be affected by aphids or fungal diseases.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Water found on Jupiter 08.09.2018

When studying the Great Red Spot with ground-based telescopes, a team of astrophysicists from the United States managed to distinguish the spectral traces of water. Apparently, its content in the Jovian atmosphere is comparable to carbon monoxide (CO), the presence of which has been known for quite some time. Apparently, the total oxygen content on Jupiter exceeds that of the Sun by 2-9 times.

This finding supports theoretical and computer simulation models that have predicted the presence of abundant water on Jupiter. Indeed, if there is oxygen and hydrogen, then why not be water?

The spectral signatures of water were discovered by studying Jupiter's cloudiness below the uppermost layers. At first it seemed to the authors of the study that the overlying layers of the atmosphere blocked any radiation from below, but in reality this did not happen. The researchers were able to look inside Jupiter's atmosphere "thousands of miles away".

There is definitely water on the moons of Jupiter, so its presence on the giant planet is not such a big surprise. Nevertheless, the result obtained is an obvious success, since water has been detected from Earth.

According to some assumptions, Jupiter has a solid core, perhaps a dozen times larger than the Earth. It may very well be that in the foreseeable future, scientists will be able to detect it too.
