When did boxing appear?

Many people tend to think that boxing should be outlawed. This has happened many times in the history of boxing. The argument of its opponents is this: it is too cruel, even a barbaric sport.

I wonder how they would react if they saw the first boxing fights that took place in Ancient Greece at the Olympics and other competitions! Some of the then boxing rules were very similar to modern ones. But there was one big difference: instead of gloves, the fighters put on the so-called cestus. It was an overlay made of leather, upholstered with lead or bronze plates. A cestus strike, as you might guess, could be simply crushing!

After the fall of the Roman Empire, boxing disappeared and did not reappear until it was revived in England in the early 100th century. It soon became a very fashionable sport, and continued to do so for over XNUMX years.

Fights were fought with bare fists. Many of them lasted several hours. Wrestling and throws were allowed. The round ended only when one of the fighters managed to knock down the opponent, and the rest time between rounds could fluctuate. This tough fight continued until one of the fighters at the beginning of the next round was no longer able to enter the center of the ring.

Naturally, boxing in such a cruel form finally restored public opinion against itself. To save this sport, something had to be changed. For this purpose, they began to use gloves stuffed with something soft, such as cotton. Then, little by little, the old rules became more and more humane. And finally, in 1867, an important step was taken: the Marquis of Queensberry proposed a set of rules that benefited boxing and returned it to its former popularity. In particular, the duration of each round was limited to three minutes. The break between rounds was to last one minute. These rules have been adopted all over the world and are practically valid to this day.

Until the XNUMXth century, boxing was practiced, one might say, in two countries: England and the United States. But since then, boxing has spread widely around the world, and today it is one of the most popular sports on Earth.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The effectiveness of exercise depends on the time of day 23.04.2019

A lot depends on the biological clock in our body, including metabolism - according to some estimates, at least half of the metabolic processes are subject to circadian rhythms. But in this case, the metabolism should respond differently to exercise depending on when we do it.

Researchers from the Weizmann Institute observed mice by having them run on a treadmill that moved in different modes (mice are nocturnal animals, and they ran on a treadmill when they were naturally awake). It turned out that, in general, mice cope better with physical activity in the evening, towards the end of their mouse day. But this difference disappeared if one of the genes that regulate circadian rhythms was turned off in mice.

During the "evening fitness" mice in the muscles became more molecule ZMP - ribonucleotide 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide. It is known that ZMP stimulates the reactions of glycolysis - oxygen-free energy production, and the breakdown of fatty acids. (ZMP has a synthetic analogue, AICAR, which athletes take to improve endurance and is banned as a doping in official competition.) That is, due to the "evening" higher level of ZMP, the muscles received more energy, and the mice showed better results on running track.

The matter was not limited to mice: the researchers brought twelve volunteers to the laboratory, and it turned out that people have a similar pattern - if they exercised in the evening, the body consumed less oxygen. And this means that the muscles worked with greater efficiency.

Similar results were obtained by employees of the University of California at Irvine. They analyzed substances formed during muscle metabolism and the activity of various genes that are related to glycolysis and fat breakdown. One of the genes that affects energy responses encodes the HIF-1alpha protein, which, depending on the level of oxygen in the tissues, regulates the work of other metabolic genes. It turned out that the activity of HIF-1alpha itself changes depending on the time of day, and, accordingly, metabolism in the muscles occurs differently.
