Inexpensive replacement for diamond

12.07.2013

Scientists have found that a relatively inexpensive material can replace expensive diamonds in high-performance electronics. We are talking about thermal conductivity, which at room temperature diamond is more than 2000 watts per meter per degree Kelvin, which is 5 times higher than that of the best metal conductors such as copper. Due to this unique property of diamonds, they are sometimes used to remove heat from the cores of high-performance processors. Unfortunately, even synthetic diamonds are too expensive to be widely used in electronics such as home personal computers.

The high thermal conductivity of diamond is familiar to scientists and is explained by the small mass of carbon atoms and the rigid chemical bonds between them. However, scientists recently discovered that another compound has the same record thermal conductivity: unlike diamond, boron arsenide with a cubic crystal lattice. A team of theoretical physicists from Boston College and the US Naval Research Laboratory decided to find out how a chemical compound of boron and arsenic can compete with diamond. A new theoretical approach allowed scientists to discover the secret of the high thermal conductivity of boron arsenide.

Unlike metals, where heat is transferred by electrons, diamond and arsenide are dielectrics, they transfer heat using vibrational waves that move from atom to atom. In this case, the collision of these waves creates an internal resistance to the heat flow.

Physicists were surprised to discover an unusual interaction of certain vibrational properties of boron arsenide, which usually remained out of the view of scientists studying the thermal conductivity of electrical insulators. It turns out that the collision between oscillatory waves in a certain frequency range is much rarer than at other frequencies. As a result, at a certain oscillation frequency, boron arsenide conducts more heat and is similar in these parameters to diamond.

The new study provides a fresh look at the physics of heat transfer in a material and at the same time illustrates the power of modern computational methods. In practice, the discovery will allow the development of new methods for removing heat from miniature electronics, which will dramatically increase its performance. It is also possible that new information can be applied to the development of highly efficient technologies for alternative energy.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The boom in sales of fitness bracelets 31.08.2014

According to Canalys, there is a real boom in the fitness tracker market. Fitness bracelet sales increased 648% year on year.

A year ago, only a few large companies were present in this market, but now almost every manufacturer is fighting for its niche in a new segment.

At the same time, the first and second places still remain with the pioneers of the market represented by Fitbit and Jawbone. Although it is worth noting that the source divides all devices of this type into two categories: ordinary bracelets, as well as "smart" ones that can run third-party applications. Judging by the examples given by analysts, they also include smart watches in this group. And Fitbit and Jawbone are leading in the first group.

As for the second group, Samsung became the leader here. The second place in this group is occupied by Pebble, and the third went to Sony. The source does not provide exact data, but judging by the schedule, in the first half of this year, about 4,5 million units of ordinary trackers were shipped, while about 1,8 million devices were "smart" devices.
