How do some plants help bats find themselves?

Some bats feed on the nectar of plants, which use it for their pollination. However, in a dense forest, finding the right flowers for bats is not easy, as they have poor eyesight and rely more on echolocation. Marcgravia evenia, a plant from the Margraviaceae family, has specially shaped leaves that look like a satellite dish, which helps bats find them, because this shape is more effective at reflecting echoes.

How do glasses correct vision?

It is impossible to even imagine that the life of millions of people can be complete without glasses! If you are nearsighted, you will not be able to see the night stars. You will not be able to see clouds, distant mountains, or a bird flying high above. Thanks to vision correction, people with nearsightedness can now see just as well as people with normal vision. We see because the light entering the eye falls on the retina of the eye, as on the sensitive plate of a camera. It is clear that if the light falls on the retina or in front of it, then we are not able to see clearly.

The eye has a lens to focus the light and direct the rays to the desired point. When normal eyes look at a distant object, the image hits the retina without problems. But when the same eye looks at a close object (say, closer than five meters), the image is focused behind the retina. The lenses of the eyes "accommodate". This means that the right muscles contract and change the shape of the lens. This directs the image to the retina and the eye sees the object clearly.

Two things can make accommodation impossible. The first is when the lenses of the eyes age and lose their elasticity. The lenses cannot change shape and focus the image. The second reason is that people are born with eyes that are too long or too short. People with too short eyes are farsighted. They see distant objects well, but must strain their eyes a lot when looking at close objects.

Sometimes it is not possible to do this well enough to bring the image into focus on the retina. These people need glasses. Glasses do work that the muscles of the eye cannot do. They focus the image on the retina without accommodation of the eye.

Nearsighted people have very long eyes. The image is focused in front of the retina and blurred. But short-sighted people can't do anything about it. If they accommodate the eye by tensing the muscles of the eye, then they can only move the image forward. They need glasses that shift the focus back to the retina so they can see clearly.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Soap dispenser telling jokes 09.08.2021

Amazon continues to try to make smart homes even smarter - even where it's not exactly required. A smart soap dispenser from all previously known is presented.

The Amazon device is equipped with an LED screen that counts down 20 seconds. This is how much the WHO recommends washing your hands, which is especially important during the coronavirus pandemic. Okay, now this is even useful! Move on.

Thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi module (yes...), the dispenser connects to Amazon smart speakers. And here begins what it was all about: the dispenser automatically plays songs and tells jokes while you wash your hands. Otherwise, it will be too boring, according to the company. By the way, for all this to work, the dispenser needs to be charged - at least once every three months.

The price of new items is $55.
