Phraseologism: Love is a delightful dream.
Meaning: About someone's love relationships or love failures (jokingly ironic).
Origin: From the play "Princess Dream" (1895) by the French playwright Edmond Rostand (1868-1918). The first line from the stanzas of Bertrand (a character in the play) translated (1896) by Tatyana Lvovna Shchepkina-Kupernik (1874-1952), who herself admitted that this was "a free retelling rather than a translation" ("Theater in my life", M.- L. 1948).

Origin:
From Latin: Sic transit gloria mundi. A phrase from the rite of enthronement (elevation to the dignity) of the Pope. Around 1409, a custom was introduced into this rite: at the moment the solemn procession of the highest church hierarchs of the Roman Catholic Church entered St. Peter's Cathedral, where the enthronement took place, a bundle of tow was burned on a staff three times before the future Pope and they said at the same time: "Holy father! Thus passes worldly glory." But this phrase became popular thanks to the book "The Imitation of Christ" (1427) by the medieval theologian Thomas of Kempis (1379-1471). There is an expression: "Oh, how quickly the glory of the world passes!" Since 1616, the book has gone through more than two thousand editions in different languages, which greatly contributed to the popularity of this expression among many peoples. |
