Once Poseidon sent the Cretan king Minos a sacrificial dazzling white bull, which appeared from the sea. Some, however, say that Minos, annually sacrificing to Poseidon the best of the bulls he had, once became greedy and sacrificed the second most beautiful bull, thereby angering Poseidon.

Others say that he offended Zeus. Still others argue that Pasiphae herself did not propitiate Aphrodite for several years in a row, for which she punished her, inspiring such a terrible passion. To hide the shame of Pasiphae, Minos, on the advice of the oracle, turned to Daedalus, and he built the Labyrinth - a dungeon with intricate passages, in the very center of which Minos hid the Minotaur.

We try to rid the skin of bacteria and acquire the latest cosmetic products that promise ever more powerful and long-lasting antibacterial effect. Indeed, microbes on the skin can cause a lot of trouble, such as acne, or inflammation of the sebaceous glands, which is believed to be due to Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. So it's not in vain that we try to keep our skin clean by washing off dust, dirt and sweat as often as possible.

But not all bacteria are equally harmful. Researchers from AOBiome (USA) spoke at a conference of the American Society for Microbiology about the benefits of nitrifying bacteria for the skin. They are found in abundance in water and soil, being important players in the nitrogen cycle. The products of their vital activity are nitrites (salts of nitrous acid) and nitric oxide NO. But just such compounds play a big role in physiology - in the regulation of inflammation, wound healing, in the expansion and narrowing of blood vessels. (For example, it was recently discovered that nitric oxide suppresses the autoimmune response, and this is just one of its ever-growing functions.) In addition, nitrifying microbes could absorb ammonia, which is released with sweat and disrupts the acid-base balance. balance on the surface of the skin epithelium. Therefore, the authors of the work came up with a simple idea to plant microbes on a person and see if the skin condition changes.

Volunteers who agreed to the experiment were given a suspension of Nitrosomonas eutropha bacteria taken from the soil on their face and head; some received a bacterial-free placebo suspension. For the first two weeks, none of them used shampoos or any other hair care products; on the third week, everyone returned to their usual hygiene and cosmetic procedures.

Bacteria took root in people: in those who were smeared with a bacterial substance, the DNA of nitrifying microbes was found in 83-100% of cases after a week, and in 60% after two weeks. The main result, according to the authors of the work, was that the condition of the skin with bacteria improved, and the stronger, the more bacteria remained on it. Volunteers did not have their own N. eutropha, this was specially checked before the experiment, so that the effect could be attributed entirely to the bacterial suspension. As for the side effects, they could not be found.

N. eutropha can exert its effect not only directly by releasing physiologically active nitrogen compounds and lowering pH, but also by influencing the skin microflora. After all, no matter how hard we try, it is impossible to completely get rid of skin bacteria, and nitrifying microbes could adjust the skin's own microflora so that it behaves well. Despite the small statistics (only 24 people participated in the experiment), the positive result from the presence of N. eutropha was quite obvious. However, it is still necessary to confirm the obtained data in a more impressive experiment, at least in order to once again make sure that there are no negative side effects.
