How dangerous are asteroids?

The asteroid hazard scale, adopted by the International Astronomical Union, is graduated from 0 to 10 points.

Zero gets an asteroid whose orbit, although it intersects with the orbit of the Earth, but it has no chance of a collision. Ten marks an asteroid, the fall of which can lead to a global climate catastrophe

Among about 2000 asteroids with a diameter of more than a kilometer, crossing the Earth's orbit, all are "null".

How do elephants live in their herd?

Elephant herds can range from ten to twenty animals to fifty or more, with most of the individuals in the pack being blood relatives. Usually the head of the herd is an old, wise elephant. She is followed by other females with their offspring of various ages. Young males also live in the herd, but adults - they often live alone, apart from the herd, often visiting him.

If two or more male elephants return to the herd at the same time, fights are inevitable. One of them eventually wins, seriously injuring the enemy with his tusks and driving him out of the herd, if not killing him altogether. The herd roams everywhere, visiting their favorite feeding grounds at different times of the year. During the dry season, elephants retreat to forests or stay close to reliable water sources. In the rainy season, they get out onto the grassy plains. The daily life of the herd follows a certain routine. In the early morning, the elephants head to the nearby river. Here they quench their thirst and bathe: they go into the water, flounder in it, water themselves from their trunks.

Elephants are excellent swimmers and can overcome wide water barriers on their way. After bathing, they wander nearby for several hours, chewing grass and tree leaves, and then stop in some shaded place for a midday rest. When evening comes again, sometimes they return to the river to drink. They can feed until late at night before settling down to rest again.

Some elephants sleep lying down, but many adults, especially among African elephants, sleep standing up. All adult elephants in the herd are constantly on the alert in case of danger. They have poor eyesight, but more or less tolerable hearing and an unusually developed sense of smell.

If a predator, such as a lion or a tiger, attacks a baby elephant from the herd, the whole herd rises to its defense. In Asia, tigers kill about one out of every four baby elephants. Adult elephants are rarely attacked by other animals.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

poison against poison 13.09.2003

Two well-known toxic substances - benzopyrene and tributyltin - can serve as an antidote to one another. This conclusion was made by biologists from the Institute for the Study of the Sea at the University of Quebec (Canada).

Benzopyrene, found in tobacco smoke, for example, is a powerful carcinogen. More precisely, in the body it turns into such under the action of one of the enzymes. Tributyltin is an organic tin compound that is poisonous to marine animals, and especially to their larvae. This substance is added to the paint for the underwater part of the hull of ships so that they are not overgrown with mollusks, worms and corals.

It turned out that tributyltin inhibits the activity of the very enzyme that turns benzopyrene into a carcinogen. In turn, benzopyrene reduces the toxicity of tributyltin. This was found in experiments with fish, in aquariums to which one of the substances or both were added at once.

The discovery may have practical implications for medicine.
