When did you first start using combs?

Once a woman realized that she could become more attractive if she styled her hair in a special, unusual way. That's when the hairbrush probably appeared. A comb is a very simple device with "teeth" that, passing through the hair, makes it neat.

The Papuans lived on the island of New Guinea. They had very coarse, thick hair in tight curls. Some believe that it was the Papuans who invented the comb to straighten these curls to a huge shock on the back of the head.

The comb is one of the oldest human inventions. Some of them were made of bone, others of wood or horn. Such combs were found at the site of a settlement of ancient people on the shores of a Swiss lake. The Egyptians had ivory combs. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York displays thousands of years of Egyptian ebony and ivory combs. The amazing thing is that they look modern and could be used by any of our women.

At an early stage of civilization, people made combs from whatever was at hand. For example, from bamboo, as in certain parts of Asia, or from the veins of a coconut palm leaf, as among the inhabitants of the Polynesian Islands. In New Guinea, combs were made from bull horns.

Medieval artists tried to decorate combs as much as possible. On some of them you can find images of saints, others are decorated with glass or gold. There are copies with Latin inscriptions.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Hard drives won't go down in price for a long time 17.06.2012

While the hard drive industry has almost recovered from last year's floods in Thailand, price cuts should not be expected until at least 2014.

Hard drive prices will remain high in the near term, despite the industry's rapid recovery from last year's devastating floods in Thailand. This was warned by the research company IHS iSuppli. "Before 2014, we do not expect that the average selling price of hard drives (ASP) will drop to the values that were before the floods in Thailand," - contained in the analysts' report.

Analysts at IHS iSuppli attributed the high prices to a monopoly acquired by Western Digital, which bought Hitachi GST, and Seagate Technology, which acquired Samsung's hard drive business. "Before the acquisitions, Western Digital and Seagate Technology owned 62% of the global market, after - 85% of the market. This allows you to control price changes and keep ASP at high values," the experts explained.

In March 2011, WD announced the $4,3 billion acquisition of Hitachi GST, the world's third largest magnetic storage maker. A month later, the announcement of Seagate and Samsung followed (the deal amounted to $1,4 billion).

In addition, long-term contracts between PC manufacturers and hard drive suppliers played a role in maintaining prices - they were signed when vendors were afraid of a shortage of drives. Under these contracts, prices were fixed at about 20% higher than the cost of hard drives before the flood.
Finally, another reason for high prices is the growing demand in the storage market, partly due to the increase in demand for personal computers, the experts concluded.
