How did the animals get their names?

Not all English animal names appeared in the same way. Some names that already existed in other languages were simply called the English word. Other names are a combination of words that describe a given animal. Let's see how the names of some animals came about.

Hippo means "river horse" in Greek. "Hippos" means horse, and "potamos" means river.

Rhino is a Latin name that comes from two Greek words. Rhinos means nose and Keras means horn. And the rhino does indeed have a horn on its nose!

The word "leopard" comes from the Latin "leopardus", which means a spotted lion.
