Mobile phone tracked by a special signal

Studies have shown that every mobile phone has a special digital "fingerprint", that is, a unique signature that can be used to track the location of the mobile phone.

A new method of tracking mobile phone owners was discovered by researchers from the Technical University of Dresden. The new technology uses tiny differences in the quality of the various electronic components inside the phone. These differences affect the characteristics of the radio signal, which allows you to accurately determine which device is emitting a given radio signal.

Tech-savvy criminals, terrorists, and others who desire anonymity are finding increasingly sophisticated ways to evade surveillance. To do this, they change the identification code of the phone, regularly change SIM cards, etc. However, the unique signature of the radio signal of the phone remains unchanged and allows you to identify the mobile phone.

Various microcircuits and details in the phone remain unchanged, no matter how the subscriber uses codes, SIM cards and encryption applications. As a result, the data stream transmitted by each phone to the mobile tower contains radio signal parameters that can be used for identification. At the same time, the accuracy is very high: in laboratory tests on 13 different phones, it was possible to identify a mobile phone with an accuracy of 97,6%.

The advantage of the new method is its passivity: the mobile communication station does not send any requests, and there is no need to install spyware on the phone. On the other hand, it is difficult to say how effective the new tracking technique will be in relation to professional criminals and terrorists, because they have long learned to use "disposable" mobile phones and change them quite often.
