Mullein scepter, Verbascum thapsiforme Schrad L. Description, habitats, nutritional value, use in cooking Mullein is a biennial herbaceous plant from the norichnikov family. The plant of the first year of life does not have a stem: a rosette is located right on the ground, consisting of 8-12 large lanceolate leaves covered with a soft whitish thick fluff. To the touch, the leaves are velvety, thick, elastic, up to 20-30 cm long and about 10 cm wide. In the second year, a stem 1,5-2 m high grows with a large spike-shaped inflorescence at the top, consisting of a large number of yellow flowers and unblown buds. A thick root goes deep into the ground. Plants are often solitary or in small bushes. The mullein has adapted well to dry, sandy soil. Multiple hairs prevent the evaporation of water from the leaves and stem. And the leaves themselves are built in such a way that even a little rain can water the plant. Raindrops collect in the middle of the leaf and flow down the trunk straight to the root. Mullein blooms almost all summer. It is a good honey plant. Its flowers attract bumblebees, butterflies and bees. Mullein is found on forest edges, on dry sandstones, near roads and housing, along river banks, on sandy and stony soil. The corollas of flowers contain up to 2,5% of mucous substances, up to 11% of carbohydrates, up to 36 mg% of ascorbic acid, carotene, essential oils, saponins, flavonoids, aucubin glycoside and other substances. Mullein flowers are used in alcoholic beverage production to improve the taste of drinks. In addition, they are added to tea. Collect corollas of flowers in dry weather. They are easily separated from the flower, dry well in the oven and in the sun, without losing their honey aroma. Timely collected and properly dried flowers retain their yellow color. The browned flowers are unsuitable for food. Author: Koshcheev A.K.
