Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

In what language are eagles and livers the same word, and why?

In the Lezgi language, one word is used to designate an eagle and a liver - "lek". This is due to the long-standing custom of the highlanders to expose the bodies of the dead to be eaten by predatory eagles, who first of all tried to get to the liver of the deceased. Therefore, the Lezgins believed that it was in the liver that the soul of a person was located, which now passed into the body of a bird. There is a version that the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus, whom the gods chained to a rock, and the eagle daily pecked at his liver, is an allegorical description of such a rite of burial of the highlanders.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. HP Metal Jet technology for 3D metal printing 23.09.2018

HP Inc. announced a new technology for mass production of metal parts using 3D printing. The company claims that its development, dubbed the HP Metal Jet, provides multiple performance gains (up to 50 times) at a significantly lower finished product cost compared to other 3D printer technologies.

Equipment using HP Metal Jet features twice the number of print lines and four times the number of nozzles compared to competing solutions.

The application of the technology will begin with the manufacture of finished stainless steel parts. They will have a degree of isotropy not lower than that required from steel according to ASTM and MPIF standards.

Volkswagen was one of the first customers to use the HP Metal Jet in industrial production. The photo below shows a car gear knob, which is made using new technology. HP, commenting on this example, says that Metal Jet allows you to create the most complex forms that other manufacturing technologies cannot do.

Automakers have high hopes for the technology. For example, it should help produce lightweight (without compromising safety) metal parts for electric vehicles.

Volkswagen notes that by using the HP Metal Jet to produce parts, there is no need to prefabricate production equipment and tools.
