How was rubber first made?

In 1737, the French astronomer, surveyor and traveler Charles Condamine (1701-1774) presented rubber samples he had brought from South America to the Paris Academy of Sciences. Over the next hundred years, rubber became widespread in Europe and the United States: galoshes, raincoats, life buoys and many other useful things were made from it.

However, the industrial use of this material was hampered by its main drawback: in the heat, the rubber became stretchy and sticky, and in the cold it hardened like a stone. Many tried to eliminate this shortcoming, one of them was the American Charles Goodyear (1800-1860). In his experiments, he mixed rubber with any substance that came to hand: salt, pepper, sugar, sand, castor oil, ink, magnesia, even soup. Goodyear followed the naive belief that sooner or later he would try everything on earth and finally find a successful combination.

One day (this was in 1839) Goodyear accidentally spilled a mixture of rubber and sulfur on a hot stove. Quickly dropping lumps of the mixture from the stove, he, to his surprise, found that they did not melt from the heat, as usual, but were charred. Goodyear noticed that an elastic strip several millimeters wide had formed along the edges of the charred areas. This was the material that today is called rubber. And the process of adding sulfur to rubber, followed by heat treatment, is called vulcanization (named after the Roman god of fire, Vulcan). The discovery of Goodyear marked the beginning of the industrial production of rubber.

Subsequently, Goodyear said: "I admit that my discovery is not the result of scientific chemical research, but at the same time I cannot agree that it was just a pure accident. I affirm that my discovery was the result of perseverance and observation."

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why does a person round his eyes and open his mouth in surprise?

Rounding the eyes in surprise or fear is a reflex action that allows you to expand the field of view and thereby better assess the situation and the degree of danger. A similar reaction is demonstrated by the great apes. Also, in unexpected situations, many animals involuntarily open their mouths, which is associated with the connection to the perception of the vomeronasal organ, which is part of the additional olfactory system. In humans, this organ is not associated with the oral cavity, but the reflex is preserved.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Condors are about to fly 12.02.2002

Argentinean and Chilean scientists are preparing to release eight Andean condor chicks raised in special nurseries. In this way, they hope to save the legendary bird from extinction.

The condor is the heaviest bird in the world that can fly, with a wingspan of almost four meters. The condor feeds on carrion and is extremely useful as a nature orderly. Zoologists hope that sooner or later their pets will be reunited with their brethren. The condor is considered the national symbol of Chile. It is capable of reaching a height of five kilometers in flight and overcoming more than 300 kilometers per day. The only natural enemy of the condor is man, and this has led to the almost complete extermination of the bird.

Farmers mistakenly believe that the condor feeds on their living creatures, and ruthlessly exterminate it. In Venezuela, the condor is completely exterminated, in Colombia and Ecuador there are no more than a hundred individuals left, in Peru and Bolivia there are only a few more of them, and even in Argentina and Chile, where this bird is taken care of until you can not worry about its fate.
