How does the Macropinna microstoma fish protect its eyes?

A deep-sea fish called the smallmouth macropinna has an interesting eye defense mechanism. Her tubular eyes are inside a transparent head. Moreover, what can be mistaken for the eyes in the photo, in fact, is the organs of smell, and the green cylindrical eyes are hidden precisely inside the shell. Fish can move them from vertical to horizontal position and vice versa in order to look for different types of prey.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Who first came up with the alphabet?

The letters of the alphabet are actually symbols of sounds. The letters of the English alphabet are based on the Roman alphabet, which is about 2500 years old. The capital letters almost exactly resemble the Roman letters used in the XNUMXrd century BC. e.

Before the invention of the alphabet, people used drawings to record events or convey messages. The image of several antelopes could mean "here is a good hunt", that is, it was a form of writing. Such "pictorial writing" was widespread in ancient Babylon, Egypt and China.

Over time, pictorial writing has changed. The drawing, instead of just a depiction of the object, began to represent the idea associated with the indicated object. For example, a drawing of a foot could represent the verb "to go." This period of writing is called "ideographic" or "idea-transmitting".

But the problem with such a letter was that the message could be understood differently by different people. Gradually this method changed. The symbols began to correspond to the combination of sounds. For example, if the word "id" meant "hand", the drawing of the hand began to mean the sound "id". Therefore, whenever they wanted to convey the sound "id", they used a drawing of a hand. This stage of writing can be called "syllabic writing".

In Babylon and China, the development of writing did not cross this threshold. The Egyptians created a kind of alphabet by including 24 characters in the drawings, denoting individual sounds or words consisting of one consonant. However, they did not understand the significance of their invention.

About 3500 years ago, the peoples who inhabited the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea made a discovery that brought them closer to creating an alphabet. They realized that the same sign can be used for the same sound in all combinations, so they used a limited number of signs for this purpose. Such signs became the alphabet.

The alphabet began to be used by the ancient Jews and the Phoenicians. The latter passed the alphabet to the Greeks. The ancient Romans adopted the Greek alphabet with some changes and additions. Hence the Latin alphabet was adopted by the inhabitants of Western Europe. This is how the modern alphabet was born.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The Internet can reduce the risk of dementia 11.05.2023

A study from Indiana University found that spending more time online can reduce your risk of developing dementia. This is very important news as dementia is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases that robs people of their memory and ability to understand the world around them.

The researchers examined data from nearly 4000 adults who participated in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. The study participants were divided into two groups - those who spent more than two hours a day on the Internet, and those who spent less than two hours a day. The researchers compared the brain health of the two groups.

It turned out that those who spent more than two hours a day on the Internet had a 30% lower risk of developing dementia than those who spent less than two hours a day. These results support previous studies that have also shown that being active online can reduce the risk of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.

However, the researchers caution that spending a lot of time on the Internet may not be the only way to prevent dementia. It is important to keep a variety of activities and spend more time outdoors, exercise and eat right. In general, an active and healthy lifestyle is key to maintaining brain health and preventing dementia.

It is important to note that spending time online can have both positive and negative effects on brain health. For example, social media use can increase the risk of developing depression and isolation, which can lead to cognitive decline. In addition, the poor quality of sleep associated with the use of electronic devices in the evening can also negatively affect brain health.
