How do trees grow?

The tree has three main parts. The roots hold the plant in the ground and absorb water and mineral salts from the soil. The trunk and branches carry the juice and raise the leaves to the sun. The leaves are the nutrient factory for the whole plant. The tree becomes taller and wider due to the growth of shoots and branches at the top. At the ends of the branches, new cells are constantly added. At the same time, all trunks, branches and twigs become thicker. Most trees have a special layer in the trunk between the main wood, through which the juices flow, and the bark. In this layer, the cells grow rapidly, the trunk develops due to this in width.

Every year this layer adds a ring to the old tree. By counting these rings on a cut of a tree, one can determine the age of the plant. Water and mineral salts come from the roots to the leaves through this substance of the trunk. The bark contains pathways through which nutrients from the leaves are carried throughout the tree.

The tree grows, the old rings of the trunk coarsen, lose contact with the leaves. They become mere reservoirs of water and eventually become hardwood. While water and mineral salts rise along the trunk, and the trunk itself grows, the process of producing nutrition for the whole plant is going on in the leaves.

Using the energy of the sun, the green substance in the leaves (chlorophyll) absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. It combines carbon dioxide with water and mineral salts dissolved in it, which came from the roots, and forms sugar and starch.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why does water remain on the skin of a person who has come out of it, and does not roll down?

Water remains on the skin of a person who has left it, and does not roll down, as, for example, from the fat-covered plumage of waterfowl, only because human skin is wetted with water: water molecules are attracted by the forces of intermolecular interaction to the skin stronger than to each other.

The cotton fabric of the towel is even more wetted with water - water molecules are attracted to the fabric of the towel more strongly than to the skin, and when wiped, they pass from the skin to the towel. Otherwise, the towel would simply smear the water over the skin without absorbing it (which is exactly what would happen if the towel was made of synthetic fabric that repels water).

Wetting - a surface phenomenon that occurs when a liquid comes into contact with a solid body - also manifests itself in the spreading of a liquid over a solid surface. It plays an important role in the impregnation and drying of porous materials, washing action, metal soldering, gluing, fluid flow under weightless conditions.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

32 Gb ReRAM chip 23.02.2013

Back in early January, the preliminary program of the ISSCC 2013 conference announced an interesting joint report by SanDisk and Toshiba on the development of the industry's first ReRAM chip (resistive memory) with a capacity of 32 Gbps. And now some detailed information about the new product has become available.

The chip was released using a 24nm process technology. The area of one cell is 24 x 24 nm, and the area of the entire crystal is 130,7 mm2. The memory page size is 2 kilobytes. The read and write latencies are 40 and 230 µs, respectively.

The traditional cross-point ReRAM architecture uses conductive metal oxides. Selective devices are located at the intersection of horizontal lines and vertical bit lines, and cells are formed in the same plane with other circuits. The new chip forms a two-layer array of memory cells on shared page registers and readout amplifiers. This made it possible to increase the density of the components. According to the source, this approach is similar to the technology of Matrix Semiconductor, which was bought by SanDisk.
