How a London dandy is dressed

Pushkin A.S.
Pushkin A.S.

Phraseologism: How a London dandy is dressed.

Meaning: About a man who is dressed fashionably, in everything new - "from the needle" (jokingly-iron.)

Origin: From the novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" (1823-1831) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837) (1, stanza 4): "Here is my Onegin at large, // Cut in the latest fashion, // Dressed like a London dandy - // And finally saw the light."

Random phraseology:

An ordinary miracle.

Meaning:

About something unlikely (long-awaited), which nevertheless became a fact, a reality. An analogue of the obvious - the incredible (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

The title of a fairy tale play (1956) by the Soviet playwright Yevgeny Lvovich Schwartz (1896-1958). The play became especially popular after its adaptation (directed by Mark Zakharov). E. L. Schwartz himself wrote about the meaning of this expression in the prologue of his play: "An ordinary miracle" - what a strange name! If a miracle means extraordinary! And if ordinary - therefore, not a miracle. The answer is that we are talking about love. A boy and a girl fall in love with each other - which is common. Quarreling - which is also not uncommon. Almost die of love. And finally, the strength of their feelings reaches such a height that it begins to work real miracles - which is both surprising and usual.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

In the mirror of the moon 20.04.2002

Looking closely at the narrow crescent of the Moon during the new moon, you can see that the part of our natural satellite not illuminated by the Sun is still slightly visible (especially if you look at least through weak binoculars). It is illuminated by the same sunlight, but reflected from the Earth.

French astronomers, having studied the spectrum of this weak light, found, firstly, that blue tones predominate in it (it’s not for nothing that the Earth is called the “blue planet”!), And secondly, this spectrum lacks light with a wavelength of less than 725 nanometers. It turns out that the fact is that these wavelengths are absorbed by the Earth's vegetation during photosynthesis. Thus, our forests and meadows are visible from cosmic distances.

The authors of the discovery believe that the discovered phenomenon can be used to search for plant life on other planets.
