Why are St. Bernards depicted with casks of brandy around their necks?

St. Bernards in photographs are often depicted with a cask of brandy around their necks. Allegedly, this alcohol is used to bring to life people found under a snow blockage in the mountains. In fact, the monks from the monastery of St. Bernard, who came up with the idea of using dogs of this breed to search for those caught in an avalanche, claim that this has never happened, because alcohol only contributes to the outflow of heat and does not help the freezing one. Apparently, the English artist Edwin Landseer depicted the first barrel of brandy around the neck of dogs in the painting Alpine Mastiffs Rescuing a Stuck Traveler.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Production of lithium-ion batteries will grow by 390% 29.01.2012

A new report from analyst firm IDC Energy Insights forecasts an explosive growth in lithium-ion battery production from 6,689 MWh in 2011 to 26,149 MWh in 2015, i.e. about 390%. This growth will mainly be driven by the advent of electric vehicles and the need for stationary batteries.

Electric vehicle production worldwide will increase by more than seven times compared to 2011, and by 2015 the total battery capacity will reach 17,331 MWh. This year, North America is the largest consumer of these products, but Asian manufacturers will soon take its place. If the cost of lithium-ion batteries declines, the demand for stationary batteries worldwide will increase 17 times compared to 2011 and reach 640 MWh in 2015.

To meet this demand, several manufacturers intend to build one of the largest factories in the history of the industry. These companies include Panasonic (Japan), Samsung SDI (South Korea) and Johnson Controls (USA), as well as smaller market players A123 (USA), Electrovaya (Canada) and BYD (China). In the United States, the production of lithium-ion batteries is stimulated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which provides grants for this activity. However, the largest share of lithium-ion battery production is in Japan, South Korea and China. The governments of these countries have placed the production of lithium-ion batteries in the sphere of national interest and have invested heavily in the creation of new factories.

Lithium-ion batteries are the most preferred type of devices that find use in a wide range of systems ranging from electric vehicles to computers and household power tools. Such popularity of batteries is explained by their flexible functionality, long service life, sufficiently high energy density and other characteristics. The only drawback that affects the wider use of this type of batteries is their price: they are much more expensive than other types of batteries. However, the gigantic increase in production capacity will lead to a significant reduction in the cost of these devices.
