When did people start exploring the underwater space?

The first underwater explorer was probably a man who was looking for something to eat underwater. Hundreds of thousands of years ago people knew how to fish. These ancient fishermen lived on the shores of lakes in Africa. They attacked the fish and caught it with their hands. It made people learn to swim. Then the swimmers learned to hold their breath and dive.

The first dives took place near the shores of lakes and seas, where it was deep and the water was clear. Gradually, divers mastered greater and greater depths. They found and carried out various interesting and useful objects from the water. These were edible shellfish, and beautiful colored corals and shells, which were used as decorations or sold. Even 4000 years ago, the Indians dived deep off the coast of Peru and took out bivalve shells of mollusks from the water, which were one of their favorite foods.

At the same time - thousands of years ago - on the other side of the globe, people were extracting oysters from the depths of the Persian Gulf, but not for food. Divers needed pearls, which were inside the shell in the soft part of the body of the oyster. As now, pearls were used as decoration. The ancient Greeks and Turks are sometimes called the founders of modern diving. They began to conduct research on sponges in the Aegean more than two thousand years ago, and what they learned is still important. They found that the more air they inhaled before diving, the longer they could stay underwater.

Eventually, someone came up with the idea that they should take an extra supply of air with them in a device they called a water bladder. The bubble was made from the skin of a goat, sheep or pig. Then it was lubricated with oil, and it became waterproof. All but one hole was tightly sewn together. The diver inflated the waterskin and, with a heavy stone that held him under water, descended. Now he could work under water for some time, and, as needed, inhaled air from a waterskin.

Why did George I become the king of Greece, taking only 18th place in the elections?

In 1862, the Greeks overthrew King Otto, but they did not want to abandon the very idea of \u230b\u95bthe monarchy, deciding to choose a new monarch in a general referendum. There were no ballots with candidates, and any subject could propose his candidacy. A convincing victory with 6 thousand votes (more than 18%) was won by the son of Queen Victoria, Prince Alfred, but he could not become king, since long before that Great Britain, France and Russia signed an agreement under which not a single member of their royal families could take the Greek throne . For the same reason, many other candidates refused the throne, and only the Danish prince Wilhelm, who received only 50 votes and took XNUMXth place, had no objections. It was he, under the name George, who ruled Greece for the next XNUMX years.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Handheld x-ray scanners 17.01.2013

Engineers at the University of Missouri have developed a compact X-ray source that is about the size of chewing gum. This development will create hand-held X-ray machines needed by doctors and security services.

Modern x-ray machines are too bulky and consume a lot of electricity. The new device is based on lithium niobate crystals, which have piezoelectric properties and act as voltage boosters. During the experiments, the new device was able to raise the voltage from 10 volts to 100 thousand volts. The lithium niobate crystal is an X-ray source: vibration energy is extracted in the form of a high-voltage electron beam, which is decelerated by a metal plate and produces X-rays.

The developers believe that in 3 years, based on the new technology, they will be able to create a compact X-ray machine, which is needed in many industries. A handheld X-ray scanner is useful for searching for defects in various designs, for examining luggage, on space technology, such as rovers. In medicine, portable x-ray machines are especially needed: imagine that dangerous radiation when taking a picture of a tooth will not be directed into the oral cavity, but vice versa - a “pill” emitter will be attached from the inside. It is possible that the power of the emitter can be increased hundreds of times, and then the military and special services will be interested in this invention, because the piezoelectric X-ray emitter will become a powerful secretive weapon that can kill a person.
