How do wolves hunt?

The wolf has always had a bad reputation. In numerous fables of Aesop, in fairy tales and nursery rhymes, he is portrayed as a pretty scoundrel. And the evil wolf attempted on Little Red Riding Hood, and did not leave the three pigs alone. But still, how does this animal actually get its food? Wolves have their own hunting trails that stretch for hundreds of kilometers. To make a full circle on them, wolves sometimes need more than one week. From time to time they scatter in different directions, pricking up their ears and turning up their noses in anticipation of possible prey. Throughout their path, the wolves have "marked poles". These are stumps, trees, large rocks, or other conspicuous objects that they urinate on, just like dogs do on lampposts and bushes.

Every time a wolf runs past a marked post, he sniffs it, thus finding out what other wolves have passed this way. The main food of wolves is meat, and its type depends on which animals are more common in a particular area and more accessible.

Wolves usually attack solitary deer, elk and other large ungulates. In Canada and Alaska, wolves follow the trail of caribou (Canadian deer) and pounce on deer and adult animals that have lagged behind the herd. In the north, they sometimes even attack such large animals as musk oxen. And if any livestock is left unattended in a deserted area, the wolves will almost certainly bite and eat it too. When they cannot find anything more substantial, they do not disdain rodents and rabbits. And even if this is not there, the wolves are interrupted by some kind of plant food, for example, berries.

Sometimes they chase their prey for hours. Their run is not so fast, but they almost never get tired and can run like this for kilometer after kilometer. In the end, the prey is driven. Several wolves attack from the rear, others from the front. When the prey finally falls, the pack pounces on it and mauls it until it is dead. Then all members of the flock arrange a feast, eating seven or more kilograms of meat for each. The remains can be hidden or buried in reserve.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

High Voltage MOSFETs for High Speed Switching Devices 12.04.2016

Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE), the European electronics division of Toshiba Corporation, has introduced a new series of high-speed high-voltage MOSFETs for switching voltage regulators.

The four 800V and 900V n-channel devices feature low typical on-state resistance (RDS(ON)) down to 1,9 ohms. Target applications for the new devices are flyback converters for LED lighting, auxiliary power supplies, and other circuits that require switching currents below 5A.

The new enhancement mode MOSFETs are manufactured using Toshiba's eighth-generation Pi-MOS-8 planar semiconductor manufacturing process, which combines a high level of integration with an optimized cell structure. This technology reduces gate charge and capacitance without losing the benefits of low RDS(ON), the company said.

Toshiba envisions these MOSFETs as a low-current addition to the existing 800V DTMOS IV series with DTMOS4 Super Junction technology. The TK3A90E 2,5A and TK5A90E 4,5A transistors have a VDSS rating of 900V and typical RDS(ON) ratings of 3,7 and 2,5 ohms, respectively. The 4A TK80A4,0E and 5A TK80A5,0E transistors have a VDSS rating of 800V and typical RDS(ON) ratings of 2,8 and 1,9 ohms, respectively.

Toshiba's new MOSFETs feature an ultra-low maximum leakage current of only 10µA (VDS = 60V) and a gate voltage threshold range of 2,5 to 4,0V (at VDS = 10V and 0,4mA drain current) . All devices are shipped in standard form factor TO-220SIS cases.
