Archeology cannot determine when people began to wear clothes, as they are not preserved in burials. However, this can be done by another science - genetics. A study of the DNA of body lice, which lay their eggs on clothes, showed that they evolved from head lice about 170 years ago - it was at this time that people began to dress.

How are new stars different from supernovae?

There are stars whose brightness increases very quickly: a star, flaring up for several days or even hours, suddenly flares up. The luminosity during a flash can increase tens of millions of times! Then the brightness of the star begins to fade, first rapidly and then slowly, and the star eventually becomes the same as it was before the outburst. Such stars are called novae. Amateur astronomers often discover such stars. It used to be thought that this was indeed a re-emerging star. But all these stars existed before, only they were found with difficulty because of their weak luminosity.

Many of the new stars flare up repeatedly. What makes stars explode? Very hot stars are often in an unstable state. Energy bursts out of their bowels, the outer gas layers break off and rush into space with great speed, only to dissipate later. After the explosion, in a year or two around the weakened star, a gaseous nebula becomes visible in telescopes, bright, expanding. The ejected shell, illuminated by the star, moves away from it, dissipates in space. A new star is not destroyed during a flash, but only throws off part of its stellar matter. There are over 200 new stars, and most of them are in the Milky Way.

Sometimes explosions of stars are of such enormous power that the luminosity increases enormously - hundreds of millions of times! And the star is destroyed. Such a star is called a supernova. Supernova explosions are an extremely rare but remarkably bright phenomenon. Such stars become so bright during the flash that they can be seen with the naked eye even during the day. Over the past millennium, five supernovae have exploded.

How to recognize someone else's dream 31.12.2017

A team of scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, has identified a "hot spot" in the posterior cortex near the back of the head, where when people say they are dreaming, low-frequency brain waves (associated with unconsciousness) are attenuated and high-frequency activity increased regardless of whether it was during periods of rapid eye movement or not.

Sleep provides science with the opportunity to study consciousness in all its various forms, from realistic dreams to complete unconsciousness. When a person is asleep, researchers can separate their conscious experience from the confusing influence of perceptions.

During the experiments, the scientists used electrodes to record the waves emitted by the sleeping brain using high-density electroencephalography. The researchers woke people up at short intervals and asked them if they had dreams, and if so, what the dreams were about. In one of their experiments they collected about 200 of these "awakening reports" from 32 people, and in another they added about 800 more from a smaller group of people specially trained to tell dreams.

In a third experiment with seven subjects, the scientists were able to determine with 87% accuracy when participants were dreaming and when they weren't. What's more, they were able to link brain wave activity in certain areas of the brain to specific elements of dream content - scenes, characters, and speech. These same areas are activated under the impressions that arise upon awakening.

"We did not try to predict the content (of dreams), although this direction is very interesting," the scientists say.
