When did the first ovens appear?

At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, stoves began to appear, although the hearth was still the main source of heat in the house. The stove was more efficient than the hearth, since it was inside the room and heated it both by radiating heat and by moving hot air. The movement of air means that when heated, it rises, and when cooled, it falls down.

The very first ovens were made of clay or brick with wrought iron or bronze doors. As wrought iron became cheaper, stoves were made entirely from it. Metal conducts heat much better than clay or brick, so iron stoves were a great improvement. They gave more heat and better warmed the air in the room.

The first metal furnaces were called five-plate. These were boxes made of five wrought iron plates: one on top, one on the base, and one on three sides. The fourth side was open: with it the stove was inserted into the fireplace, so that the smoke went out into the chimney.

The first metal stoves that did not have to be placed in the fireplace were made in Holland and Scandinavia. They were six-plate, as they were made from six wrought iron plates that formed the six sides of the box. The stoves had a door to put in the fuel and shovel out the ashes. They also had a blower - a hole through which air passed for better draft, and a hole at the top to which a chimney pipe was attached.

The first stoves were fired with wood, coal or other cheap local fuel. In the 1820s, a charcoal-fired stove appeared in America called the plinth stove. It was designed to be fired with small pieces of coal, which were cheap. Coal burned on a grate in a firebox. Such a stove could be heated 24 hours a day.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why are they given water to soothe?

When a person is in a state of passion, they give him a glass of water to calm him down. Such help is not only psychological. Due to the close proximity of the pharynx and larynx, the processes of swallowing and breathing are coordinated, so slow drinking of water reflexively reduces the frequency of breathing and evens out its rhythm.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Learning new things, we forget the old 25.03.2016

A group of scientists from Germany, Spain and Italy showed in experiments on mice that in the process of memorizing new information in the brain, new connections between neurons are simultaneously formed and existing ones are weakened.

Working with mice, neuroscientists studied the hippocampus, the region of the brain responsible for the formation of memories. Information enters the hippocampus via three different pathways, and the connections between neurons are strengthened as memories are consolidated. By blocking the main "path", the scientists found that the mice were no longer capable of learning, to form conditioned reflexes. But if the information was already learned before such a blockage, then the memories remained.

But something else was more surprising. The researchers found that connections along this blocked "path" weakened - this could not be affected by the blockage itself. The source of this weakening was found: it turned out that this happened at the time of the formation of new ties.

"One explanation is that there is a limited amount of space in the brain, so when you're learning, you have to loosen some connections to make room for others. To learn new things, you have to forget things you've learned before," he said. study leader Cornelius Gross.

Scientists believe that their discovery may be, in particular, the key to understanding how people forget traumatic events.
