Where did the myth of lemming mass suicides come from?

Biologists in the 19th century could not explain the sudden decline in the population of Norwegian lemmings. Together with observations of their mass migrations, when some animals do not calculate their strength and drown when overcoming water barriers, this fact led to the emergence of a false hypothesis about mass suicides of lemmings. The myth was widely popularized by the 1958 Disney documentary The White Waste, in which lemmings were shown one by one jumping into the water from a high cliff. Later it turned out that the film crew specially purchased several dozen of these animals and forced them to move in the right direction with the help of snow-covered vehicles.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

DAP-04 - 4-channel DALI to PWM converter 05.07.2016

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a digital protocol designed specifically to create low-cost and flexible building lighting control systems. Only two wires are required to form a connection between DALI devices, and there is no need to observe polarity.

Historically, this protocol has gained immense popularity for lighting control in conjunction with ballasts (drivers) of fluorescent lamps. However, there are not so many LED lamps or power supplies for LED lamps (drivers) with the DALI protocol on the market. Current products that support DALI digital control are more expensive than common devices with a dimming interface based on a modulated pulse width (PWM) signal or a 0-10 V signal.

The DAP-04 converter from Mean Well allows you to connect to the lighting control bus via the DALI interface and get 4 independent analog PWM signals at the output. Thanks to DAP-04, instead of ready-made luminaires or drivers with DALI control, you can use cheap luminaires or drivers with simple PWM or 0-10 V control. In this way, a simple controlled DALI-based lighting system is realized with little financial cost.

Additionally, without an external DALI controller, the device allows you to implement the control of luminaires according to the "Push Dimming" option (control of the luminaire by pressing the switch). Up to 20 drivers can be connected to each output of the device, and thus it is possible to organize 4 controllable groups of 20 lamps each, which is quite enough for a medium-sized room.

When installing the system, it is necessary to program and assign the DAP-04 (master controller) address. By default, the transmitter has address 255, which means "address not defined". After assigning an address, DAP-04 can work with any DALI controller.
