In addition to carpentry and various synthetic, casein glue is widely used in home construction. It is made from low-fat cottage cheese and some other ingredients that are added in small amounts to make the casein water-soluble and water-resistant after drying.:

Casein goes on sale in the form of a heavy white powder and does not require any additional components for the preparation of glue, except for boiled water at room temperature. Glue is prepared immediately before use in the following proportion: 100 g of water is added to 230 g of powder if you want to get liquid glue, or 170 g of water if the glue should be thick.:

The powder is poured into water gradually, with continuous stirring of the mixture. It is necessary to stir the glue until a completely homogeneous mass is obtained, for 20-40 minutes, depending on the type of glue, its moisture content, etc. During this time, the so-called "ripening" of the adhesive occurs.:

Stirring the mixture by hand is not easy and unpleasant. Therefore, it is recommended to prepare casein glue in this way: mix the powder with water first with a hand-held wooden spatula until the entire powder swells enough, and lumps and grains are crushed; after that, an electric stirrer, shown in the figure, is lowered into a jar of glue:

It is not difficult to make it yourself by using a small-sized motor from a room fan or an electrified toy for children with transmission through some kind of reduction gear. You can finally use the now commercially available electric machines for making a cocktail. Of course, battery power will have to be converted to mains power - through a step-down transformer and a simple rectifier. An electric stirrer for 15 - 20 minutes brings the adhesive to the desired condition.:

It is recommended to prepare casein glue in glass or porcelain dishes. After using the mixture, carefully remove the remaining glue, wash the dishes with warm water and only then do a new batch. Do not add fresh glue to the old one. Casein glue, depending on its composition and quality, can be used after preparation for 2-4 hours. Glue that has begun to gelatinize or coagulate is no longer suitable for work. It cannot be diluted with water, as the adhesive qualities are not restored from this.:

Casein glues plywood (not bakelized), wood to wood, various fabrics to wood well. But it shrinks a lot when it dries, causing warping, and therefore is unsuitable for gluing very thin parts, as well as fabrics together. Thick casein perfectly glues foam of all grades. Not suitable for bonding metals, plexiglass and rubber.:

When gluing with casein, wooden parts must be carefully fitted (joined) to each other so that the thickness of the glue line is minimal. Glue is applied to the surface of the products to be glued with a bast brush or a flat wooden spatula of a suitable shape. Bristle brushes are not recommended, as they quickly fail. Before connecting the glued parts, they are given the so-called "exposure" for several minutes, so that the glue is absorbed deeper into the wood. After that, the parts are connected, fixed in the desired position and clamped with clamps, zvinki or "flies" - depending on the configuration of the parts and the place of gluing.:

The time the parts are kept in a compressed state affects the strength of the seam. therefore, the clamps should not be removed before the adhesive has completely cured, which usually occurs within 24 hours at +20 °C. The chipping strength of the bond under such conditions ranges from 100 to 140 kg/cm2. This means that under load, pine and spruce will not collapse along the glue line, but along the whole tree.:

When soaking a sample correctly glued with casein glue in water for 24 hours, it should retain at least 70% strength. This picture takes place:

casein glue
Stirrer for the preparation of small portions of casein glue: 1 - vessel with glue, 2 - wire stirrer frame, 3 - stirrer axis, 4 - microreducer, 5 - microelectric motor:

in direct contact of the adhesive seam with water. If the glue line is protected by a layer of paint or waterproof varnish, its strength remains practically unchanged during a very long operation.:

If there is no place to buy ready-made casein powder, you can cook it yourself. To do this, ordinary cow's milk is skimmed on a separator or, what else:

it’s easier, they let it settle and turn sour in a narrow, tall bowl. Then the fats are removed (sour cream and cream), and a little hydrochloric or sulfuric acid is added to the rest of the milk with a pipette. At the same time, the milk quickly coagulates, casein flakes fall out of it. Curdled milk is poured into a sieve (or gauze), the whey is squeezed out, and the remaining mass - casein - is dried and crushed in a mortar to obtain a powder.:

To prepare a waterproof glue, almost as good as a purchased one, mix 100 weight parts of casein powder with 20 parts of slaked lime and 500 - 600 parts of water in the following sequence: first, casein is soaked in 40 parts of water, when it swells well, lime is added, dissolved in the rest parts of water, stirred for 30 minutes, then introduced into a solution of 0.5-1 g of potassium permanganate (potassium permanganate) and stirred for another 20-30 minutes until a homogeneous creamy mass is obtained.:

Casein glue is used when assembling frame frames (gluing scarves, knitting corners, etc.), for gluing the frame of a type-setting boat, for connecting plywood sheathing with a frame, for pasting a finished boat with cotton fabric (only in the absence of resin or nitro glues), for gluing items of internal equipment (seats, boxes, enclosures, lockers, etc.), for gluing oars, parts of the spars of sailing ships.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

4D drone camera 29.07.2017

A team of scientists from Stanford University has created a 4D camera designed for unmanned vehicles and drones that will deliver goods.

The developers call it the world's first wide-angle (140°) light field camera with a single lens. The camera allows you to calculate and record information about the distance to light sources. As a result, the focus point can be changed already in the finished picture.

The creators of the novelty, comparing ordinary cameras with their own design, say about the peephole and the window: "A regular photograph does not allow you to get additional information about the depth of the image and so on. Looking through the window, you can see much more."

Such cameras will allow robots and unmanned vehicles to more confidently navigate in space, avoiding obstacles and collisions, even in low light and bad weather conditions.
