Columbus Russian

Lomonosov M.V.
Lomonosov M.V.

Phraseologism: Columbus Russian.

Meaning: It is used as a poetic description of Russian pioneer navigators (poetic, high-flown).

Origin: From the 1st song of the unfinished poem "Peter the Great" (1756-1761) by Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (1711-1765): "Russian Columbuses, despising gloomy rock, // Between the ice will open a new path to the east, // And ours will reach America power". Here the poet repeated the expression that he had already used earlier, in an ode (1747) dedicated to Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, where he recalls the opening of the strait between America and Asia by the Russian navigator Vitus Bering (1681-1741): "Russian Columbus through the waters // Hastens into the unknown peoples..." "Russian Columbuses" really reached America, as a result of which in 1768 Alaska was annexed to Russia. In 1867, Russia, represented by Emperor Alexander II, sold it to the United States of America.

Random phraseology:

He laughs best who laughs last.

Meaning:

Do not rush to conclusions.

Origin:

From French: Rira bien, qui rira le dernier. Literally: He who laughs last laughs well. From the fable "Two Peasants and a Cloud" by the French writer and fabulist Jean Pierre Florian (1755-1794). In Russia, this phrase became famous and entered Russian phraseology after the performance of the comic opera The Postman from Longjumeau by the French composer Adolphe Charles Adam (1803-1856) on the Russian stage. In it, this expression was used (act. 2, scene 9) without indicating the source, as a common phrase that has long been common in French.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Cotton conductor 22.04.2010

The idea of embedding electronics in clothes has been haunting designers and journalists for a long time. However, engineers are not yet ready to implement it in the required format - that is, so that a T-shirt-player, jacket-flashlight or hat-telephone would be comfortable and safe. One of the problems - obtaining a fabric capable of conducting electricity - is close to being solved.

At a fashion show held at Cornell University (USA), Associate Professor of Fiber Optics Juan Inestrosa and his Italian colleagues from the Universities of Bologna and Cagliari demonstrated a conductive cotton fabric.

Unlike analogues, it is as soft and light as ordinary fabric, and does not lose its conductive properties either when washing, or when ironing, or when repeatedly creasing. To achieve success, scientists have developed a technology for applying a layer of semiconductor polymer with metal nanoparticles to cotton fiber.

Abbi Leibman, a graduate student from the Design Department, was able to add a few knots to construct a dress from this fabric that can generate electricity using flexible solar panels and recharge it with an MP3 player or phone. The USB port required for this is hidden in the belt.
