Crocodile tears

German
German

Phraseologism: Crocodile tears.

Meaning: Feigned sadness, insincere regrets.

Origin: The expression arose in Russian as a result of a literal translation of the complex German word "Krokodilstranen". The appearance of the corresponding formation in the German language is associated with the belief that when a crocodile devours a victim, it sheds tears (cf. in the Alphabet Book of the XNUMXth century: "Korkodil, a water beast ... When you have a man to eat, then he cries and sobs, but the food does not stop").

Random phraseology:

Utopia.

Meaning:

A common noun for all sorts of unrealistic, ideological, complacent social projects (iron.).

Origin:

Initially, the expression meant a fantastic, fictional, non-existent country. The word became popular thanks to the English thinker, Chancellor of England Thomas More (1478-1535), who published (1516) in Latin an essay entitled "On the best state of the state and on the new island of Utopia." In it, the writer painted a picture of a society of social harmony and general well-being. The name of the island is formed from two Greek words - the negation of "not" and the noun "place" - and is translated either as "non-place" or "a place that does not exist anywhere."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

60-inch LCD TVs from Foxconn and Sharp 08.10.2012

Announced in early August this year, the production alliance between Foxconn Electronics and Sharp is becoming more and more real. Taiwanese industry sources say the companies have begun joint development of 60-inch LCD TVs, with first batches expected by the end of October.

According to available information, the production of television panels will be occupied by Sharp's 10G generation plant. The estimated cost of devices, which, by the way, will be supplied to the market under the SIO brand, will be $1000 for the North American market, $1265 for the Chinese market and $1300 for the Taiwan market. Despite the release scheduled for October, mass production of products will not begin until the first quarter of 2013.

This decision will play into the hands of not only the group's members, but will also have a favorable impact on the large LCD TV market: manufacturers of the currently most popular devices with a diagonal of 32 and 42 inches will be forced to start reducing prices. Companies offering 60-inch models will not be left behind. First of all, we are talking about LG Electronics and Samsung, which, according to experts, will have to share their market share in the world market with the brainchild of Foxconn-Sharp.
