We offer a description of a homemade tent, which we made two years ago and which is serving us for the third season. The tourist house, in our opinion, turned out to be more comfortable than many others, and original enough to acquaint interested readers with its design.

When designing, we proceeded from the following criterion: maximum comfort with a minimum of weight. Since one multi-person tent is lighter than several single-person tents and it is less troublesome to install, its bottom dimensions were chosen to be 2x2 m. Three tourist foam mats are laid out on such an area, four people are accommodated (and with backpacks). Although in the "overload" you can spend the night with five, and even six!

The maximum height of the tent is 1,6 m, which allows you to sit and change clothes freely. We made straight sides (walls) 0,3 m high, so that you can lie down without touching the sloping roof. Increasing or decreasing the height of the tent and sides is not practical, since the former increases weight and the latter reduces comfort.

The shape of the roof is in the form of a pyramid. Such a roof is not very difficult to manufacture, and it requires less material (hence, there will be less weight and cost) than a tent or ordinary gable.

The entrance to the tent is made in the form of a tube. It is simpler and more reliable than a zipper or buttons, and, which is not unimportant, it protects well from insects, which are many in central Russia in the summer. The diameter of the tube is equal to the height of the front wall at the entrance; to the left of it, on the wall, there is a window covered with a fine mesh.

The general view and drawing of the tent are shown in the photograph and in the figure. According to the indicated dimensions, it will not be difficult to perform a scan (pattern).

In the manufacture of the tent, only nylon materials were used, which ensured its high strength, durability (during two years of intensive use there was not a single damage!) And low weight - about two kilograms.

The roof, tube and front wall are made of thin, slightly blown nylon fabric (parachute type).

Possible schemes for setting up a tent (click to enlarge): 1 - on a central stake, 2 - on poles about 2,5 m long (you can use oars from a kayak), 3 - on a rope stretched between trees

The bottom and sides are made of impregnated nylon of medium thickness and reliably protect the sleepers from wind and rain. We would not recommend using completely waterproof materials for the bottom of the tent. They are good when the room is completely isolated from the rain. However, when water gets inside, the tent turns into a kind of bath.

The fabric was cut with a hot soldering iron with a sharpened tip, giving an even cut without "terry". The blanks were stitched with a linen seam on an ordinary sewing machine with nylon threads. A nylon cord is inserted into the four seams connecting the edges of the roof. It is necessary because the cutting of the blanks goes at an angle to the threads and the fabric stretches a lot.

The top of the roof is sheathed with a reinforcing disk (boat) with a diameter of 15 cm from two layers of fabric. Loops for attaching guy lines of the tent (there are 14 of them in total) are made of nylon cord and sewn to their places through reinforcing pads made of fabric 5x3 cm in size.

The cord is also inserted into the cut of the tube - for tightening it. The simplest devices are sewn on top and sides at the base of the tube, allowing it to be fixed in an open form. They consist of rope loops attached on the inside and small (about 100 mm long) laces with pin buttons on the outside.

An important advantage of our tent is the ease of installation. One person can put it in a time not exceeding five minutes. Only 13 pegs are used: first, the bottom is stretched on four pegs, then the roof is raised in one way or another, and, finally, a vertical position is given to the walls with rope braces, and the roof is evenly stretched along all edges.

Last but not least, in case of rain, a waterproof awning is thrown over the tent. As an awning, we usually use a large piece of polyethylene film.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

PLM-40E - 40W Step Dimming LED Driver 14.07.2016

Mean Well has expanded its range of low cost indoor LED drivers. At the moment, the new PLM-12E series has been added to the existing PLM-25E and PLM-40E series with 40W output power and only 24mm thickness.

The power supply has power factor correction (PFC; PF>0.95), operates in current stabilization mode (CC) and is available for the following standard load current values: 350, 500, 700, 1050, 1400, 1750 mA.

In addition to the low profile, a feature of the new series is the possibility of 3-step dimming through a conventional switch without additional devices. When switching off for a short time and then switching it back on (less than 2,5 sec / OFF-ON), the output current is reduced in steps of 100% - 40% - 10%.

In order to reduce the cost, in the new PLM-40E series, the manufacturer has abandoned the universal input (100/240 V). The input voltage range was chosen to be 180-295 V, which is in good agreement with our domestic electrical networks. For fixtures that do not require operation in 100/115 V networks, this series will be the best choice in terms of functionality and cost.

Main technical parameters and features of PLM-40E series:

Output power 40W
Stabilization mode - current stabilization
Output current from range: 350, 500, 700, 1050, 1400, 1750mA
Step dimming by switch
Input voltage range 180-295V
Power factor >0,95
Efficiency 88% (typ.)
IP30 (plastic housing with enclosed terminals)
Class II for electrical safety (grounding is not required)
Protection against short circuit and overheating
Operating temperature range -30°C...+40°C
Dimensions (LxWxH) 175 x 42 x 24 mm
