Catalpa

Catalpa (lat. Catalpa) - a genus of plants of the Bignoniaceae family; whose natural range is China, North America, the islands of the Caribbean.

Some species are grown as ornamental plants in many regions of the world.

Trees or shrubs 1-32 m high and up to 2 m trunk diameter.

The leaves are evergreen or falling in winter, broadly ovate or heart-shaped in shape.

Flowers are bisexual with a bipartite calyx and a bipartite corolla; stamens five, of which only two with anthers; one pistil, ovary with many ovules.

The fruit is a multi-seeded capsule. Winged seeds.

The most famous catalpa bignoniform is a beautiful tree up to 16 m tall. The leaves are large, heart-shaped. The flowers are large (up to 2,5 cm), swollen-bell-shaped, white on the outside, purple on the inside, dotted with yellow spots and stripes, collected in terminal brushes. The fruit is a pod up to 50 cm long, as thick as a finger. The tree is bred in the parks of central Europe and is called the trumpet tree (German Trompetenbaum) - another plant (Cecropia), native to the West Indies and South America, is also called by this name. Bignoniform catalpa is grown for ornamental purposes in the south of the United States, in Japan, as well as in the Crimea and on the Black Sea coast of Russia.

Another species, the longest catalpa, produces wood known as Antillean oak (Fr. Chêne des Antilles), and bark for tanning. The species grows in the West Indies and the Antilles.

Catalpa

The bignoniform catalpa inhabits the floodplains of rivers flowing through the southeastern United States. The flood-inundated deciduous forests are dominated by black willow and deltoid poplar. In some areas, in addition to catalpa, Pennsylvania ash, American elm, western plane tree and maple species were found. The sparse undergrowth is composed of undergrowth of hornbeam and dogwood, benzoic, holly and forestier bushes (Forestiera acuminata).

Bunge catalpa (Fargeza catalpa) lives in river valleys and on the slopes of the Qinling Range, up to an altitude of more than 2000 m, where it grows in mesophytic broad-leaved and mixed forests. It occurs under the crowns of deciduous oaks and Manchurian walnuts. Found among birches, young trees of Chinese hemlock and Arman's pine, which replaces Korean cedar here. The usual neighbors of catalpa are species of linden and maple, Turchaninov's hornbeam and lacquer tree. The undergrowth is characterized by blunt-leaved linder or multi-leaved hazel with the participation of Japanese dogwood, shadberry (Amelanchier sinica) and holly.

Catalpa, Catalpa. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing catalpa:

Cultivation:

  • Choice of soil and light: Catalpa prefers sunny places and moist, fertile soil with good drainage.
  • Planting: Catalpa is recommended to be planted in spring or autumn, when the soil is warm and moist. The planting hole should be dug large enough to allow the roots to develop freely. The bottom of the pit should be abundantly saturated with compost and soil material. Catalpa does not require complex planting, but it is important to make sure that the roots of the plant are well laid and dug in with soil.
  • Planting depth: the root neck of the catalpa should be at the level of the soil. Planting depth should be sufficient so that the roots of the plant can develop freely.
  • Distance between plants: The distance between catalps depends on the size of the adult plant. It is generally recommended to maintain a distance of at least 3-5 meters between plants.
  • Care: Catalpa does not require special care, but it is recommended to provide it with sufficient water and nutrients. During the growth period of the catalpa, it is necessary to remove all weeds around the plant, as well as to carry out regular pruning to form a crown.

Workpiece:

  • Catalpa flowers can be used to decorate dishes or to make aromatic tea.
  • Catalpa leaves can be used to make tinctures and decoctions that are used to treat a number of diseases.

Storage:

  • Dried catalpa leaves should be stored in a dry place, protected from sunlight and moisture.
  • Catalpa flowers should be used fresh as they quickly lose their beneficial properties. If you need to store flowers, then they should be placed in the refrigerator.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Miniature rocket engine powered by water 20.09.2023

Researchers from Imperial College London presented the world with a tiny miracle of technology - the ICE-Cube Thruster (Iridium Catalysed Electrolysis CubeSat Thruster) rocket engine, which operates due to iridium-catalyzed electrolysis. This micromotor is so tiny that its production is carried out using the same methods as the production of semiconductor chips. The engine is designed to equip compact satellites - CubeSats.

As noted on the New Atlas portal, up to 90% of space launches focus on launching small satellites weighing up to 10 kilograms into low Earth orbit. Many of them are not even larger than a regular smartphone. For such spacecraft, creating components at the right scale is a challenge. One of the main challenges is creating small rocket engines, given the limited parameters of such satellites. In this case, the engines must not only be miniature, but also as simple as possible, do not require the creation of a vacuum, consume little energy and be safe to use without using toxic materials.

The ICE-Cube Thruster rocket engine, created with the support of the European Space Agency, is only about 2 centimeters long, and the length of the combustion chamber and nozzle is only 1 millimeter. It requires only 20 watts of electrical power to operate. During tests, the engine produced 1,25 millinewtons of thrust at a specific impulse of 185 seconds—about half a billion times less than the thrust of the engines used on the space shuttle.

However, the real uniqueness of this micromotor is that it uses ordinary water as fuel, which is absolutely non-explosive and non-flammable. The principle of operation is to carry out electrolysis of water using electric current, as a result of which water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. These elements are then fed into the combustion chamber, creating the necessary thrust to correct the satellite's orbit.

The use of water as rocket fuel not only promotes environmentally friendly space exploration, but also reduces the overall mass of the spacecraft, since it does not require the use of complex systems for its storage and supply. However, developing the combustion chamber and nozzles for such an engine, which are essentially two-dimensional, presented a real challenge, requiring microelectronics techniques and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, which is typically used to process silicon wafers to produce chips with micrometer precision.
