Insurance in the mountains

Of course, it is more reliable to move around the mountains and in a group, after all, there is an opportunity to insure each other. In order not to fall from the crack, be sure to feel the snow in front of you with a pole. It is good to make insurance from a rope attached to reliable anchors on both sides. Tie a short halyard with a bow knot around the waist, and tie the other end to the main rope with a special knot. It will slide down the rope, allowing you to descend, but will stop any fall.

If someone fell into a crack and you have to pull him out, then he should be raised to the surface with all precautions: squeezing the chest with a rope can lead to suffocation. Lower the rope with a loop down, which will take all the load when a person inserts a leg into the loop. If the fallen person has lost consciousness, then the joint efforts of at least three people with safety equipment will be required to lift him. It is necessary to act as quickly as possible: the temperature in the cracks is very low, and the victim will quickly freeze.

Movement on mountain slopes is much safer if you use a staff (ice axe), when driving on steep or slippery slopes, hold it in two hands in the "at the ready" position. The hand holding the upper horse of the ice ax (at chest level) clasps the shaft with the palm up, and the other hand, which is closer to the lower end (bayonet) of the ice ax, takes the shaft with the palm down and at any moment is ready, as it were, to press the stick to the slope. With the help of a stick, you can constantly keep two points of support in motion: while the tourist takes the next two steps, he leans on the slope with a stick, then, standing on two legs, quickly move the stick forward to another point of support, and the movement cycle is repeated.

When crossing a slope (traverse, zigzag), the ice ax must always point towards the slope. When changing direction or turning to the slope with the other side, the stick is intercepted by hands without detaching the bayonet from the slope.

When crossing a ford with a stick, her bayonets are carried out against the current. At the ford on a rope, it is strictly forbidden to use loops with seizing knots. Self-belaying in a similar way when moving along a rope railing can be used in a dry place (descents, ascents, traverses), and the length of the self-belaying loop should be shorter than outstretched arms.

Self-defense in the mountains

Self-restraint consists in the ability to stop or at least partially slow down a fall, breakdown, etc. When falling or slipping on a grassy slope or small scree, instant support with a stick (alpenstock, ice ax) into the slope from the “at the ready” position is necessary. If this failed. and the tourist rolled down, one must immediately strive to roll over on his stomach, head up, and linger with a stick in a prone position while the stick is held in half-bent arms and rests with a bayonet obliquely on the ground.

When falling on a snowy slope, it is necessary to turn over on your stomach with a jerk and, pressing the stick with a bayonet into the snow, gradually slow down the movement. It is very important that the legs are wide apart and rest the feet on the slope, this will slow down the slide.

In conclusion, I want to remind you that after reading these tips or tips given in any other book or website, do not think that you are ready to make a serious ascent. You can simply move around the mountains, but to achieve outstanding results, long training and technical preparation are required.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Carbon nanotubes against water pollution by microplastics 07.08.2019

A new way to decompose microplastics could help clear waterways of these tiny bits of debris that could pose a health hazard to humans and other living beings.

Wastewater treatment plants are generally not equipped to filter microplastics. These harmful particles can break down naturally over decades, but new nanomaterials that produce plastic-degrading chemicals can break them down much faster. In preliminary tests, the nanomaterials cleared some water samples of about half their microplastic content in a matter of hours, the researchers report.

In the future, water treatment plants that use these nanomaterials could not only help prevent new microplastic pollutants from entering the environment, but also potentially remove particles from polluted waterways.

This water treatment method uses nitrogen-coated carbon nanotubes. When mixed with a compound called peroxymonosulfate, the nanotubes generate chemicals known as reactive oxygen species, which break down microplastics into smaller chemical components. Heating the water speeds up this process. The manganese embedded in each nanotube made the tubes magnetic, allowing them to be fished out of the water with magnets for reuse.

Jiang Kang, a chemical engineer at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and colleagues tested their technique on 80 milliliter water samples contaminated with microplastic particles. Treatment of carbon nanotubes in water heated to 120°C for eight hours reduced the amount of microplastics in the water by about 30-50%.

The chemical by-products of this microplastic decomposition, such as aldehydes and carboxylic acids, do not pose a serious environmental hazard, says Long Chen, an environmental engineer at Northeastern University in Boston, who is not involved in the work. For example, Kang's team found that exposing green algae to water containing microplastic by-products for two weeks did not harm algae growth.
