How long have letter blocks been widely used to introduce children to the alphabet?

The well-known cubes with letters, with the help of which many children first get acquainted with the alphabet, owe their popularity to the outstanding English philosopher and educator John Locke (1632-1704).

Once, visiting a friend whose name history has not preserved, Locke noticed that his children were playing on the floor with wooden cubes, on the sides of which letters were drawn. It turned out that the eldest of the children had already learned to read and write with the help of this toy. Locke described these cubes in his Some Thoughts on Education, published in 1693, and they soon became commonly known as "Locke's Cubes".

It was the first educational toy.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did Canada give one of the wards of the maternity hospital in Ottawa a status outside of Canadian jurisdiction?

During World War II, the Germans occupied the Netherlands and the royal family was evacuated to Canada. There, Crown Princess Juliana had a third daughter, Margriet. The chamber in the maternity hospital where the birth took place was declared outside Canadian jurisdiction by a special decree of the Canadian government. This was done so that Princess Margriet could claim the throne of the Netherlands in the future, because, having received someone else's citizenship at birth, she would have lost this right. In gratitude to the Canadians, after returning to their homeland, the Royal Family of the Netherlands sends thousands of tulip bulbs every year to Ottawa, where the annual Tulip Festival takes place. A similar incident took place in London in 1945: Winston Churchill proclaimed the territory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia the hotel room where the heir to the Serbian throne Alexander Karageorgievich was born, although he was no longer destined to become king.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Wirepas Pino Automated Wireless Network for IoT 25.10.2014

The Internet of Things market is growing rapidly. The Finnish company Wirepas, in the wake of such trends, has introduced Wirepas Pino, the first fully automatic multi-hop wireless IoT network designed for sensor networks and machine-to-machine communication.

It is reported that the Wirepas Pino stack is designed from scratch and is designed for simplified networking: according to the developers, the network can take on functions that are very difficult to implement with centralized management. Thanks to this, all Pino nodes have the opportunity to act independently and more efficiently.

Pino does not require configuration, making it easier to deploy, grow, and maintain the network. It is only necessary to provide power to the nodes and gateways, after which the network begins to work, while adapting to the emerging changes. Thanks to unlimited scalability, it is possible to create networks with a high density of nodes, covering large areas. All nodes, regardless of their role, incl. routers are capable of running on batteries for years.

Among the advantages of the network, the efficient use of the time and frequency domains, greater reliability and high energy efficiency are mentioned.

The Pino stack is completely independent of the hardware and can be used by a wide range of applications. It makes it possible to use any chipset for the 2,4 GHz bands, as well as less than 1 GHz. This allows you to deploy networks both indoors and across the city.
