What rock musician left the scene but became a star in South Africa without knowing it for years?

American folk rock musician Rodriguez released two albums in the early 1970s that sold very poorly. After deciding to leave the stage, he was a laborer, living on the verge of poverty for many years, and only in 1996 accidentally found out that he was a celebrity in South Africa. It turned out that the rights to the albums were bought by an Australian label, which released a greatest hits compilation for South Africa, where Rodriguez gained cult status and even became one of the symbols of the struggle against apartheid. In the late 1990s, the musician visited South Africa and performed live in front of thousands of fans who were previously convinced that Rodriguez committed suicide twenty years ago. And only 70 years after the release of the Oscar-winning documentary about Rodriguez, the musician gained fame in his homeland.

Why did the Turks and Caicos Islands have igloos on their coat of arms?

The old coat of arms and flag of the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are part of the United Kingdom, showed a sailboat, a local resident on the shore and two piles of salt, which reflected the role of the colony as a major salt mining point. However, the English designer, having received the images, confused the mounds of salt with buildings and added black "doors" to them. Thus, the national dwellings of the Eskimos - the igloo appeared on the coat of arms of the tropical islands, which was in use until 1968.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Sick trees are changing the world's climate 31.08.2012

According to a study by scientists from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, diseased trees in forests can make a significant contribution to methane greenhouse gas emissions and, consequently, to global climate change.

The scientists took samples from 60 locations in the forests of northeast Connecticut. As a result, methane concentrations 80000 times higher than the surrounding level were found. The normal concentration of methane in the air is less than 2 parts per million, but researchers have found a much higher average level of 15000 parts per million. "These combustible concentrations," says study lead author Christopher Covey. "We believe this phenomenon is common to all forests in the world, which means we have found a new globally significant source of greenhouse gas."

The estimated emission levels from the trees of the studied forest are approximately equivalent to burning 150 liters of gasoline per hectare of forest per year. The release of methane corresponds to 18% of the carbon sequestered by the forest, reducing its role in greenhouse gas absorption by almost one-fifth. Extrapolating these data to forests worldwide, forest methane accounts for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Trees produce large amounts of methane at an older age, between 80 and 100 years old, and when they are sick. Although the trees often appear healthy on the outside, they are often affected by a fungal infection that creates favorable conditions for the life of methane-producing microorganisms.

An unexpected discovery changes the way we look at global warming and, unfortunately, makes it even more difficult to fight it.
