Who sets the fashion?

The French word "couturier" refers to a person who designs and develops exquisite clothing for women. These people create new styles and silhouettes. We also call them fashion designers. The works of famous fashion designers are copied all over the world.

The traditional center of world fashion is Paris. But in recent times, British fashion designers, as well as some fashion designers from the United States and Italy, have had a great influence on the development of new styles. French fashion designers keep secret all their new styles until they are shown to the public. After that, pictures with new models appear in newspapers and magazines around the world.

People from many countries come to Paris to buy clothes and take note of the latest ideas in this area. In January they come to see spring fashions, and in July to see autumn styles. Many tailoring industrialists come from other countries and buy originals of the latest designs from famous French fashion designers. They send them to their own workshops and copy them point to point, and then put the model on stream and produce in huge quantities. That is why in your city you can also buy things of the latest styles without paying a lot of money for them.

Some industrialists use Parisian cuts as a basis for developing their own designs. Others use only the idea of French fashion, developing their own original style.

London has become one of the most influential international fashion centers. British fashion designers create new styles and show their collections. Representatives of all kinds of fashion stores from all over the world come to London to buy these models. After the models are selected, the garment workers get down to business and fulfill the order, purchasing the necessary material and putting the production of these clothes on stream. Then their products go to different cities around the world.

Who Invented the Pencil?

Modern pencils are no more than 200 years old. Approximately 500 years ago, graphite was discovered in the mines of the city of Cumberland in England. It is believed that at the same time began to produce and graphite pencils.

In the German city of Nuremberg, the famous Faber family began making pencils from 1760 using graphite powder, but not entirely successfully. Finally, in 1795, a certain Comte invented pencils made from a mixture of graphite and certain types of clay and fired in a kiln. This technology is still used today.

"Simple" pencils are made of graphite, which leaves a dark mark on paper.

In the production of pencils, dry graphite powder is mixed with clay and water. The more clay, the harder the pencil, the more graphite, the softer the lead. After the mixture is formed into a paste-like paste, it is passed through a molding press, obtaining thin sticky ropes. They are straightened, cut to size, dried and sent to the kiln for firing. Wooden blanks from cedar or pine are cut in half lengthwise and a groove for the lead is cut out. Both halves with lead are then glued together. The boards are cut into pencils, their outer side is polished.

Today, more than 300 types of pencils are produced for various activities. You can buy simple pencils of different hardness or order pencils in 72 colors! There are pencils for writing on glass, fabric, cellophane, plastic and film. There are pencils used in construction that leave marks on outdoor surfaces for years!

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Graphene laser for photonic microcircuits 07.06.2013

An international team of researchers from the UK, Greece and Japan has found a new use for graphene. Based on this material, it was possible to create an infrared pulsed laser, and, according to scientists, such lasers can also generate ordinary light pulses.

Graphene is distinguished by the absence of a band gap, that is, its electrons can be in a state with any energy level, unlike insulators or semiconductors, which have a certain minimum distance between the ground state and the state following it in energy. Due to the absence of a band gap, graphene can absorb even quanta with not very high energy and thus temporarily block infrared laser radiation.

When graphene is exposed to infrared radiation, the material at a certain moment (in the experiments of physicists this happened in less than a nanosecond) sharply changes its optical properties and becomes transparent. According to scientists, the implementation of such an effect directly inside the ytterbium-glass laser makes it possible to control its operation: the laser emits only when the graphene film placed inside its resonator becomes sufficiently transparent. After the graphene releases a light pulse to the outside, it begins to absorb radiation again and everything repeats again, with a frequency of about 1,6 GHz.

Calculations show that a similar scheme can be successfully used to generate pulses with any other wavelength, both in the near infrared and in the visible range. In other words, it is theoretically possible to make pulsed lasers of various colors based on graphene, and the material does not need to be subjected to additional processing. The authors of the new work consider the heat resistance of the material to be another advantage of graphene: many other substances with similar properties quickly burn out under intense irradiation.
