EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Illusionist rug. Focus secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: The illusionist approaches the proscenium, lifts the rug from the floor and shows it to the audience on both sides (Fig. 155); after that, he rolls the rug into a tube and, putting his hand inside the tube, takes out the ribbons, which are sewn at the ends to the upper edge of the rug.
He ties the tube in the middle and hangs it above the floor (Fig. 156), not very high.
Approaching the rug hanging in the form of a tube, the performer takes out several beautiful scarves from the lower hole, then many long paper garlands, which he hands over to the assistant (Fig. 157). Garlands are hung on the stage. Following this, the magician takes out a large bucket from the same place and releases the duck from it. Then he again takes out the garlands and lit lanterns and another bucket from the rug. He pours water from it into the first bucket and takes out the second duck from it. The performer then slowly removes the mat and, untying it, reveals that it is empty on both sides.
For the first time in the Soviet Union, this trick was shown in Moscow in 1926 by the Dutch illusionist Theodor Bramberg, known throughout the world under the pseudonym Okito. He was the performer and author of the act. Props: Mat. Two metal buckets with hidden compartments. Various folding garlands made of thin paper, folding figurines sold in stores, folding paper or feather flowers, folding paper or fabric lanterns with small candles inserted into them, which are lit when taken out under the cover of a rug. An ordinary path 70-80 cm wide and 150-200 cm long can serve as a rug. Okito used a woven Chinese reed mat. Four wide ribbons or a curtain cord 1 m long are sewn to one of the long sides of the rug. At the ends they are all connected together and sewn to a ring so that the rug can be hung on a hook lowered from above. If desired, you can make a rug yourself by folding a thick tarpaulin two or three times, stitching it and painting it. The mat should be hard, then it will be more convenient to perform with it: it will hold well, not bend, and the buckets in it will be well hidden. Buckets are made from tin. We leave it to you to design and manufacture the device yourself. We will limit ourselves to just giving a diagram of the secret of the Okito bucket (Fig. 194): 1 - the appearance of both buckets nested inside each other; 2 - cross-sectional diagram of an Okito bucket; 3 - our simplified diagram. Let us indicate the approximate dimensions of the buckets: diameter 25 cm and height 40 cm. Let us explain the Okito system. One of the buckets is depicted with a thick line, it is taken out second, the other - with a thin line, it is taken out first; a bucket surrounded by a thin line is inserted into the upper bucket and secured with pins A, which, when removed, make it possible to remove the first, inner bucket. Duck G is charged into it, and between the walls - in space B - you can put scarves and garlands.
The second bucket has a double bottom, and on the lower bottom D there is an opening door: garlands and folded lanterns with small candles are placed through it. Water is poured into space E and the duck is charged. This bucket has soldered ears B, from which the buckets are hung on laces together with the mat. Let's describe our option. Here also one bucket fits into another. The lower one, indicated by a thin line, has a second bottom that opens downwards; scarves and garlands are charged to room G, and ducks are charged to room 3. By removing pins A, you can remove the bucket and release the duck. The top bucket is outlined in the figure with a thick line; it is taken out second (in the double bottom I there are garlands and lanterns, in the bucket K there is a duck and water is poured). Ears B are soldered to this bucket, and pins A are inserted here, holding both buckets together. We give you the opportunity to come up with a convenient and reliable system yourself. If you wish, you can make garlands, lanterns, and figures from thin paper yourself, but they are also sold in stores. We described the production of paper and feather flowers in the illusion “Wow, Fire, Flowers”. Focus secret: You have just become acquainted with one of the secrets. These are folding buckets with special devices for charging props. Now all that remains is to explain how the buckets get into the mat. Okito performed in the Chinese style and used wide and sometimes long robes, in which it was very easy to hide quite large objects. He attached the buckets under his robe between his knees. With quick small steps, the illusionist came out from behind the scenes. He was given a mat; Having shown it to the audience, he held it in front of him and, instantly freeing the buckets, wrapped them in a mat, tied them up, took out the ribbons and hung them on a hook that was lowered to him from above. In our case, when a performer performs in a suit jacket, this cannot be done. We'll have to come up with another way. You can use a hatch in the stage floor for this. It can be made very small - 30?30 cm. While the performer, showing the mat, holds it in front of the hatch, the hatch is quickly opened and, under the cover of the mat, buckets are served, which the illusionist imperceptibly moves a little to the side with his foot. Then the hatch is closed, and the magician, wrapping the mat around the buckets, ties them with a ribbon in the middle and puts the ring on the hook lowered from above. The rug, and with it both buckets, are lifted up. Then everything goes according to the description. Before going on stage, both buckets are thoroughly charged backstage. They put one on top of the other, making sure that the birds are well placed and the duck from the top bucket cannot fly out prematurely. Come up with a convenient and harmless mount for this. In this trick, the most important thing is to rehearse well the moment when the buckets are lifted from the hatch and when they are quietly wrapped in a mat. You need to take out scarves, garlands, and lanterns slowly, smoothly, so that the assistants have time to hang everything given to them beautifully on the stage. You should pour water from a bucket while standing sideways to the audience: this way they will most likely not notice the secret device of the buckets. Author: Vadimov A.A.
