What are the reasons for the appearance of ghost islands on geographical maps?
During the time of the Great Geographical Discoveries, a large number of islands and reefs were mapped, the existence of which was subsequently not confirmed. The most famous example is Tabor Island, aka Maria Theresa Reef, which is supposedly located in the South Pacific Ocean. The heroes of Jules Verne's novels "Children of Captain Grant" and "The Mysterious Island" turn out to be on it, and the writer himself was sincerely convinced of the reality of the island. Already in the middle of the 20th century, his search was unsuccessful, but the reef continues to be depicted on some modern maps. There are several reasons for the appearance of ghost islands: sailors mistake icebergs, mirages, and floating formations of volcanic pumice for land, which can acquire vegetation and bird nests.
