Toxicodendron succulent (succulent sumac, also wax tree, Japanese lacquer tree, Japanese wax tree, sumac sequential), Toxicodendron succedaneum. Description, illustrations of the plant Toxicodendron succulent (succulent sumac, also wax tree, Japanese lacquer tree, Japanese wax tree, sumac sequential), Toxicodendron succedaneum. Botanical description of the plant, areas of growth and ecology, economic importance, applications Shrub or small tree native to Asia, a species of the genus Toxicodendron (Toxicodendron) family Anacardiaceae (Anacardiaceae). Toxicodendron is usually a dioecious large shrub or small tree up to 10 m in height. Young branches are smooth or velvety-pubescent. Leaves are palmately dissected into 4-15 lobes, each 3-16 cm long, oblong-ovate or elliptical-lanceolate, with an entire margin. The upper surface of the leaflets is bare or slightly pubescent, bright green, the lower surface is sometimes velvety, grayish. The flowers are collected in sparse panicles in the axils of the leaves, yellow-green. Calyx of five broadly ovate sepals fused at the base. The corolla is also five-lobed, with separate petals. Stamens 5, about 2 mm long, with ovate anthers. Ovary superior, spherical. The fruits are rather large light brown asymmetric drupes up to 1 cm in diameter. Seeds are almost spherical, dark brown. Toxicodendron succulent is common in the flat and hilly areas of East Asia at an altitude of 100 to 2500 m above sea level. The natural range is China, India, Cambodia, Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan. Introduced to Australia, where it naturalized and became a dangerous invasive species. As with other species of the genus Toxicodendron, all parts of the wax tree contain the strong allergen urushiol. Touching the leaves and stem of the plant can cause severe skin irritation. The fruits of toxicodendron are edible, but their consumption is not recommended due to the toxicity of other parts of the plant.
