What is gas?

Many centuries ago, in the place of Delphi in Greece, a shepherd noticed that something stood out from the earth that made the sheep behave strangely, and people got drunk from this, their speech was confused. The Greeks decided that it was the spirit of some god, and built a temple on this site. This "spirit" was natural gas.

Three types of gases are known today: natural gas, coal gas and water gas. Gas fields are located in many regions of the Earth. It concentrates in underground storages, which were formed as a result of the formation of the earth's crust. Long gas pipelines carry gas under pressure to cities thousands of kilometers away, where it is mainly used in steel mills and power plants.

Coal gas is obtained from crushed coal, which is heated in large vacuum plants. When the heating temperature reaches a certain level, the coal begins to melt, and gas is released, which is discharged through the pipes.

The gas is collected in a large container, where it is cleaned of impurities. It is then passed through cooling pipes and sent to a "purifier" where the remaining impurities are removed. And, finally, the purified gas through the meter, which determines its amount, enters the storage tanks, from where it reaches residential buildings and enterprises through pipelines.

The thick black bitumen produced during gas cleaning contains many valuable products that are used in the production of perfumes, drug dyes and oils. The substance that remains in the gas oven is called "coke".

Currently, gas is practically not used for lighting. More than 80% of the gas produced is used for cooking and heating residential and industrial facilities. Gas is a clean fuel, so it is widely used. It is easy to manage, does not require the cost of storage and destruction of combustion waste.

Now, when roasting coffee beans, cooking, baking bread, we use gas. There are even gas-fired refrigerators. Modern laundries also use gas to generate steam. The use of gas fuel is one of the ways to ensure the relative purity of air in cities.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

RF Laser Transmitter 08.05.2019

A group of researchers from Harvard University managed to broadcast an audio recording of one of the pieces of music using a radio transmitter, the key component of which was a semiconductor laser.

This laser is used as a source of radio frequency waves, a generator, in addition, it also performs the functions of modulating the transmitted and demodulating the received signals. These studies are the first steps towards the creation of new types of hybrid electronic photo-optical devices that will become the basis for the operation of ultra-high-speed wireless communication systems, Wi-Fi of the next generation.

The creation of a laser radio transmitter was a continuation of the work carried out by the researchers in 2017. Then scientists discovered that an infrared frequency comb created by a quantum cascade laser could be used to produce radio signals in the terahertz range, the submillimeter range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Signals in this range have the potential to transmit data in large quantities and at speeds far exceeding the capabilities of modern wireless communications. And in 2018, scientists found that quantum cascade lasers can work simultaneously as receivers and transmitters, very effectively encoding information in the emitted signals.

Unlike conventional lasers, which emit light at a single frequency, laser frequency combs emit a whole range of fixed frequencies at the same time. These fixed frequencies are evenly spaced along the spectrum line and resemble the teeth of a comb. And if you extract certain frequencies from the comb created by the laser, then the electrons inside the laser cavity begin to oscillate with microwave frequencies that are within the spectrum that can be used for wireless communications.
