What is a waterspout?

A waterspout and a tornado are very similar. In principle, a waterspout can be called a "tornado on the sea". So let's first see what a tornado is.

A tornado is a real circular storm. It appears as a black funnel cloud over a vast storm area. The reason for the appearance of a cloud funnel is the condensation of moisture due to cooling of the air as it spreads in breadth and up. A tornado can spin clockwise or counterclockwise. The width of a tornado in the part where it touches the ground averages 275-365 meters, and it usually travels a short distance, ranging from a few to 50 miles (80 kilometers). It is believed that inside a tornado (vortex) the speed of rotating air currents is 500 miles (800 kilometers) per hour!

Where a tornado touches the surface of the earth, terrible destruction can occur. For example, houses can be razed to the ground, broken into pieces, or moved hundreds of meters.

Tornadoes (also known as "tornadoes" or "cyclones") can appear at any time of the year, although they appear five times more often in spring and summer. More often they take place during the day, not at night. In some cases, a waterspout may just be a normal tornado that originated on land and traveled to the sea. But waterspouts of a more common type appear over the seas and lakes in the tropics or in the middle latitudes during the warm season. They occur just above the water, and funnel clouds form from rain or cumulus clouds. The lower part of the funnel, approaching the water surface, initially spins or mixes the upper layer of water into a cloud of water dust.

The funnel cloud first sinks into this water dust, and then pulls up the waterspout. But the water, which makes up the bulk of the tornado, always remains fresh, because it mainly consists of rainwater. A waterspout usually lasts only a few minutes and affects only a limited area. Most waterspouts occur over cold waters where the air temperature is high and thunderstorms are frequent.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The discovery made by pigeons 06.09.2005

The restorers of one of the cathedrals of Valencia (Spain) noticed that there is a hole in the ceiling of the cathedral through which doves fly in and out. Putting a television camera through the hole, the restorers discovered that there was a cavity above the ceiling, and above it - another ceiling, painted with frescoes in the XNUMXth century.

The "modern" ceiling of the cathedral was made in the Baroque style in 1670, while the "primary" ceiling was painted by Italian artists Francesco Pagano and Paolo de San Leocadio. The fresco depicts angels against the backdrop of a starry sky.

Now art historians are at a loss: both ceilings are monuments of art, and it is not clear what to do with them, which one to save or how to save both.
