Focus Description:

You ask someone to go and put a card on the table or look at a card already placed there. The spectator fulfills your request and wants to return to the place, but you stop him. "No, dear, this is not possible. I would like everyone to see what kind of card it is. Be kind enough to put it on the table facing the audience so that everyone can see it well."

Focus Card rises from the deck

After these words, the viewer looks at you with surprise and, finally, says that he cannot do this. "How, you can't do such a simple thing?" - you are perplexed. "Let me" - and, taking the card from him, you place it vertically on the table, leaving it to stand without any visible support. Taking the card from the table again, you serve it to the spectators to show that it is an ordinary card and, having received it back, put it on the table again, but on the other side, or, if the spectators want it, invite them to choose the card that you put with the same ease.

Focus secret:

The secret of this trick is in a rather small and simple device. This is just a piece of thin sheet brass about 3 cm long, bent at an angle less than a straight one, about 85 degrees. A thin layer of wax is applied to the outer side of the long part, and a small plate of lead, about 3 mm thick, is soldered to the inner surface of the short knee. When performing the trick, you hide this small device in your right hand, so that the long knee is on the index and ring fingers, and the short one is directed to the little finger.

Taking a card with your left hand, you shift it to your right and take it so that your thumb holds it in front and the rest of your fingers behind. When you put it on a table, which is desirable to cover with a tablecloth, then press the wax side of the stand against it. When you need to remove a card from the table, you remove it with the same hand and, shifting it to the other, you can easily remove and hide a small stand between your fingers.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Salt heating 08.12.2001

Located in the suburbs of Frankfurt am Main (Germany), a large plant of the chemical company "Hoechst" produces medicines, chamfers, plastics, food additives. It also generates a lot of waste heat.

Until recently, heated air was simply thrown into the atmosphere, hot water was cooled (which used a lot of energy) and dumped into the Main. Now excess heat is transported to the city in thermoses and used to heat the administrative building with an area of 17 square meters, which employs about 600 people.

Thermally insulated containers contain sodium acetate - a salt that melts at 58 degrees Celsius and accumulates a large amount of heat in the process. Cooling down, the salt melt heats the water in the heating system of the building. Depending on the weather, five or six containers are delivered per day, one is enough for the night. Cooled thermoses are taken back to the plant and again "charged" with heat. 400 thousand liters of liquid fuel are saved per year.

And the University of Nottingham (England) proposed a cooling system based on the same principle. The heat from the heated air is pumped into containers with solid sodium sulfate, it melts, and the temperature in the rooms drops by 2 - 3 degrees. For a relatively cool English summer, this is enough. Energy saving compared to a conventional air conditioner - 16 times.

In different countries, pocket heating pads and refrigerated salt packs have long been produced, charged with cold or heat in hot water or a refrigerator.
