Launch of the world's first floating wind farm

Scotland has launched the world's first floating wind farm. According to calculations, its capacity should be enough to cover the electricity needs of about 20000 households.

The floating wind farm is located more than 15 miles (about 24 km) off the coast of Peterhead (a city in Aberdeenshire, Scotland). Its capacity is 30 megawatts, which should be enough to provide electricity to approximately 20 households. The station called Hywind Scotland reaches 000 meters in height; it goes under water for 253 meters and is attached to the seabed with chains weighing 78 tons.

The Hywind Scotland project involves energy firms Statoil and Masdar, and their plan for next year is to install a huge 1 MWh Batwind battery to better conserve the power generated by the station.

The UK, in particular Scotland, often develops projects designed to stimulate the production of renewable energy. For example, the UK is home to the world's largest wind farms, and it is also planned that - after Hywind Scotland - an even larger floating wind farm will be launched in the Irish Sea.
