Did you know?

At what temperature does the water freeze?

The answer to this question seems obvious - at 0 degrees Celsius - but it is not entirely correct.

If very pure (preferably distilled) water is subjected to slow cooling, then it can remain liquid even at a temperature of several degrees below zero. However, if a small piece of ice, a pinch of snow or just dust is thrown into this supercooled water, the water will instantly freeze, growing into long crystals throughout the volume.

Such a strange behavior of water is explained by the peculiarities of the crystallization process. The transformation of a liquid into a crystal occurs primarily on impurities and inhomogeneities - dust particles, air bubbles, scratches on the walls of the vessel.

Pure water is practically devoid of crystallization centers, so it can be supercooled (and quite strongly), while remaining liquid. There is a case when the contents of a bottle of narzan well-cooled in the freezer, opened on a hot summer day, instantly turned into a piece of ice. Under laboratory conditions, the water temperature, however, in very small volumes, could be brought to -70 degrees Celsius.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is cancer?

You probably know from the appeals of cancer organizations and from the results of all the studies conducted in this area that this disease is the biggest threat to the health and life of mankind. We will talk about cancer only in general terms, so that you can get an idea of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbthis disease.

Cancer is a persistent malignant tumor. Its cells spread throughout the body and end up in parts that can be quite far from where the tumor first appeared. If they are not removed or destroyed in time, then cancer leads to the death of a person.

New cells are constantly being added to our body. They grow, wear out and die, and in their place exactly the same ones are formed. But cancer cells look and function very differently. They look like young cells in the part of the body where they originate, but under a microscope, you can see the differences.

Then the cancer cells divide, their number increases, but they never grow, they just stop reproducing. They multiply until they become harmful to the body.

As they grow, they do not stay in one place, but move among normal cells. Finally, there are so many of them that they crowd out the ordinary ones, which are now not only able to function normally, but also to survive. Through the blood, cancer spreads to different parts of the body. There it grows and interferes with the activity of organs.

If you do not stop the growth and spread of a malignant tumor, then the person will die. That is why periodic examination is so necessary for detection and treatment before the disease has gone too far.

Cancer is not transmitted from person to person. No remedy has yet been found to effectively treat this disease. Therefore, one of the most important goals of medicine is to fully understand the nature and causes of cancer and find a way to prevent and treat it.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Smart glasses translate text into sound 06.03.2018

Japanese company Oton Glass is developing smart glasses that can translate text into sound. It is expected that the device may be useful for people with visual impairment or dyslexia.

Oton Glass smart glasses are equipped with two small cameras. Half of the lens is occupied by a mirror that reflects the user's eye, so that one of the cameras can track the movements and blinking of the eyes.

In order for the glasses to read the text, the user must look at it and blink his eyes: then the device will take a photo and send it to a special cloud system that will analyze the text and then translate it into sound (then it will be transmitted to the user using an earpiece). If the system is unable to read the received words, the company's remote worker will know about it and be able to correct the problem.

Work on Oton Glass smart glasses began in 2012. Now the manufacturer has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Campfire (Japanese analogue of the Kickstarter platform). It is expected that such glasses may be useful for people who have reading difficulties, such as those with visual impairments or dyslexia.
