Bring under the monastery

Muscovy
Muscovy

Phraseologism: Bring under the monastery.

Meaning: Put in a difficult, unpleasant situation, bring under punishment.

Origin: There are several versions of the origin of the turnover. Perhaps the turnover arose because people who had big troubles in life usually left for the monastery. According to another version, the expression is connected with the fact that Russian guides brought enemies under the walls of monasteries, which during the war turned into fortresses (bring a blind man under a monastery). Some believe that the expression is associated with the hard life of women in Tsarist Russia. Only strong relatives could save a woman from her husband's beatings, having achieved protection from the patriarch and the authorities. In this case, the wife "brought her husband to the monastery" - he was exiled to the monastery "in humility" for six months or a year.

Two camps are not a fighter, but only a random guest.

Origin:

The beginning of the poem (1857) by the poet Alexei Konstantinovich Tolstoy (1817-1875).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Dark Sky Conference 07.03.2003

Last fall, a conference of the International Association for the Protection of Dark Sky took place in the United States. Its members are fighting against excessive lighting of cities. It especially hinders astronomers: even hundreds of kilometers from a big city it is impossible to observe faint stars, and in the city itself the stars are not visible at all.

But astronomers make up less than half of the association's ten thousand members. It includes, for example, lighting engineers who are developing more efficient street lights so as not to light up the sky in vain. Zoologists also protest against bright lighting - it knocks migratory birds off the route and disrupts the biological cycles of wintering ones.

Physicians who spoke at the conference hypothesized that electric lighting is at least partly to blame for the rise in cancer rates. This growth has been observed just since the moment when incandescent light bulbs became widespread. The unnatural extension of daylight hours, according to some doctors, disrupts the hormonal balance, and from here it is not far from the disease.

The resolution of the conference, adopted unanimously, urged everyone, if possible, to do without excessively bright lighting on the street and at home.
