How did democracy come about?

Let's see what we mean by democracy. The word "democracy" is of Greek origin and means "power of the people". When we use this word now, we mean the participation of people in the work of the government, the influence on its activities.

Political democracy emerged in two main forms. A government where people gather to discuss policies and choose officials to carry them out. This is direct democracy. When people choose their representatives to express their desires, intentions in government, this is a representative democracy.

Direct democracy is not possible on a large scale when many people are involved, and democracy is used mainly in its representative form. No nation can be considered democratic if it does not provide various civil rights and freedoms. These include freedom of speech, movement, association, press, religion and equality of all before the law.

Political democracy arose early in history. In the Greek city-states, especially in Athens, there was a direct democracy. Yet even in Athens the ruling class of citizens made up only a small part of the population. The majority were slaves, who, along with women and foreigners, did not have the right to vote and could not hold any posts. And although a form of direct democracy has existed since the time of ancient Athens, even today we find many shortcomings in it from various points of view.

Modern democracy is more connected with the Middle Ages. The idea of a social contract dates back to that time. According to this theory, an agreement was concluded between the rulers and their subordinates, which determined the fulfillment of obligations by each party. If the ruler did not do this, the people had the right to take away the power given to him.

Modern representative democracy was also born under feudalism, in connection with the needs of kings. Feudal monarchs called meetings of representatives to ask for money. They felt that the people would not object to the imposition of new taxes if their representatives agreed to it in advance.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Recharging with light 11.01.2000

A small device - a heart stimulator transplanted under the skin - saved the lives of many, but every few years the operation has to be repeated in order to change a dead battery. Osaka University (Japan) is experimenting with a stimulator recharged by light.

A solar battery is introduced under the skin - a thin plate measuring two by two centimeters. By illuminating it with a laser beam for two hours, you can recharge the stimulator for 22 hours of operation. The laser is infrared, with a wavelength of 860 nanometers: this invisible light penetrates the skin well. The laser power is 30 percent of the permissible sanitary standards for human exposure.

About 200 people in Japan wear pacemakers. Heart disease is getting younger, more and more middle-aged Japanese have to connect a stimulator, which means that throughout life they will either have to undergo operations with changing the battery many times, or find a way to recharge it.
