What device was invented by a funeral director who lost customers?

The automatic telephone exchange was invented by Kansas City funeral director Almon Strowger. According to the inventor himself, one day he noticed that the number of phone calls to his company had dropped dramatically. It turned out that a local telephone operator was transferring calls to her husband's company, Strowger's competitor. This prompted him to think that telephone operators should be replaced by automation. At the end of the 19th century, Strowger managed to patent and establish mass production of automatic telephone exchanges.

What is the source of stellar energy?

According to modern concepts, the main source of stellar energy is thermonuclear fusion reactions occurring in the interior of stars and accompanied by the release of a huge amount of energy. The main role here is played by the transformation of hydrogen (the most common element in the universe) into helium.

This process can go in two ways, the first of which is the sequential attachment of four protons (hydrogen nuclei) to each other and their union in a helium nucleus (proton-proton reaction).

The second way of the thermonuclear fusion process consists in the addition of protons to more complex nuclei, starting from the carbon nucleus, with the subsequent decay of the resulting new complex nucleus into a carbon and helium nucleus (carbon cycle).

The proton-proton reaction is critical at temperatures below 16 million Kelvin, at higher temperatures the carbon cycle predominates.

With an increase in temperature up to 100 million kelvin, energy can be released during the formation of carbon nuclei directly from helium nuclei (helium reaction).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

mosquito tomato 16.09.2002

The American chemist Michael Rowe, while testing new compounds that repel insects, suddenly noticed that one of them, in terms of the structure of the molecule, is very similar to some kind of oily organic substance that is part of tomatoes.

He synthesized this substance, soaked a piece of gauze with it and threw it into a jar of cockroaches. The insects immediately fled. It turned out that the "tomato" compound also repels mosquitoes. Compared to the well-known DEET repellent, it is no less active, but lasts longer on the skin and does not cause allergies.

The chemist does not disclose the true name of the new repellent (a patent has not yet been issued), but reports that this substance has long been known, is used in cosmetics, and its harmlessness has been fully proven. Therefore, there is hope that the new repellent will be on sale by the next mosquito season.
