What future awaits our luminary - the Sun?

The sun was formed about 5 billion years ago and for at least 4,5 billion years, thanks to the reactions of converting hydrogen into helium occurring in its central regions, it has been steadily radiating warmth that is beneficial for us, the inhabitants of the Earth.

According to modern astrophysical concepts, in 8 billion years the Sun will become a red giant. At the same time, its luminosity will increase hundreds of times, and its radius - dozens. This stage of the evolution of our star will take several million years, after which the swollen Sun will shed its shell and turn into a white dwarf.

It is surprising that back in 1895, long before the emergence of theoretical astrophysics, the presence of a red giant stage in the evolution of the Sun was predicted by the English writer HG Wells in his novel The Time Machine, which opened the history of modern science fiction. Moving in time "in huge steps, each a thousand years or more," the hero of the novel watched the Sun "become bigger and dimmer," and then "the huge red dome of the Sun obscured a tenth of the darkened skies."

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Was Tsar Ivan the Terrible a great ruler?

Some historians believe that it was, but what is its greatness - they explain rather confusingly. At the beginning of his reign, Ivan the Terrible won two wars - he conquered the Kazan and Astrakhan khanates. All other wars started by Grozny were successfully lost. The capture of Kazan and Astrakhan somewhat weakened the Tatar threat, but did not eliminate it at all.

Fifteen years after the capture of Astrakhan, the troops of the Crimean Khan approached Moscow. The tsar, who was stationed with an army in Serpukhov, fled to Aleksandrovskaya Sloboda, and from there to Rostov, leaving Moscow to its fate. Moscow was burned, more than 200 thousand people died in the fire, about 150 thousand more Tatars were taken away in full.

What Ivan was really great in was his cruelty, which amazed people even in those merciless times. During the capture of Kazan, almost the entire male population of the city was slaughtered. When the tsar undertook to subjugate Novgorod, allegedly about to surrender to the hand of the Polish king, more than a hundred thousand people were killed in the city. People were executed in the most brutal ways, along with their wives and children.

Mass executions accompanied Ivan's entire reign. He left behind a devastated, bloodless country.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Only half of US residents use landlines 05.01.2013

Gadget aficionados won't be surprised by the results of a new study showing that about half of US residents have given up landline use. For many Americans, the home phone is reported to have become a pointless device, as all calls tend to be made using a mobile phone.

As part of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) "National Human Health Study," experts spent a year asking about the health of American homeowners, their insurance, and, in particular, whether they have a home phone. It is worth noting that US residents who for some reason cannot afford a stationary device have the opportunity to apply to the Universal Service Fund to receive it for free.

The researchers surveyed about 20 households and found that more than half (51,8%) of Americans use mobile phones or smartphones for almost all calls. At the same time, 35,9% use only mobile communications at home, and 15,9% have a stationary device, but rarely use it. Older Americans are more conservative and prefer to talk on their home phone, while younger people prefer mobile devices.
