What is a tan?

People often expose their skin to sunlight to "tan". But few people realize that sunlight has a very significant effect on the skin. The most significant of these effects is sunburn, or reddening of the skin. This is caused by ultraviolet radiation, which converts histidine, a substance found in the skin, into another substance that dilates blood vessels.

This is what causes reddening of the skin. There is another substance in the skin - tyrazine. UV light converts tyrazine into a brown pigment called melanin. Melanin is then deposited in the outer layers of the skin to protect it from further exposure to light rays, and this is what we call sunburn. Sunlight also has a positive effect on the body. It destroys fungi and bacteria that may be on the skin. Sunlight also causes the appearance of a substance in the skin that constricts blood vessels, which leads to an increase in blood pressure.

Exposure to sunlight can also activate certain cells in the body that resist infections. Even the muscles of the body are toned with the help of sunlight. And the nervous system is also stimulated. In addition, the body receives vitamin D because ultraviolet light produces chemical changes that lead to the formation of this vitamin.

Since we have found out that sunlight does so many useful things, does this mean that a person should strive to sunbathe as much as possible? The answer to this question is this: since sunlight acts like a medicine on the body, care must be taken to get a moderate amount of this medicine.

If you are going to tan, then you need to do it gradually: a few minutes during the first day, five minutes more the next day, and so on. If you spend too much time in the sun, it can harm both the skin and the entire body.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where and when was a bicycle race organized to escape to another country?

In 1915, a group of athletes from the Belgian Liege asked the commandant of the German occupation troops for permission to hold a bicycle race in order to raise funds to help the victims of the war. He agreed on the condition that each participant put a German flag on the bike. The route of the race was assigned from Liège to the village of Molingen near the Belgian-Dutch border. At the finish line, the cyclists did not stop and went straight to the Netherlands, which was a neutral state during the First World War, and the German soldiers guarding the track did not have time to prevent the fugitives.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

When the ears wither 04.11.2002

In experiments on rats, American biologists have shown that auditory hairs - thin extensions of hair cells in the inner ear that perceive sound vibrations - die off and are renewed every 48 hours. During the day, the hair lengthens by 2,5 microns.

It is assumed that the same process takes place in humans. After attending a rock concert or a blacksmith shop, hearing is usually impaired by loud noises for about 48 hours. Apparently, during this time, the dead auditory hairs grow back.
