The spinning top has amazing stability. He always tries to stand upright. Even if its axis of rotation is slightly tilted, it still will not fall, struggling with the force of gravity of the Earth, which tends to overturn it. In this case, the end of its axis will describe circles.

Some physical devices are based on the stability of the axis of a rotating top, on its desire to maintain the same direction in space. One such device is the gyrocompass. Its readings, unlike a magnetic compass, are very reliable, as they do not depend on the influence of surrounding iron and steel objects.

With the help of a pendulum, one can verify how the axis of a rotating top maintains its direction in space.

For this experiment, take the largest pot lid (preferably 30-35 centimeters in diameter), tie two strong ropes a little more than a meter long to it and hang it on a strong crossbar.

If you swing the lid, it will swing on the ropes, all the while forming a right angle with them. If you strike the edge of the cover during these swings, it will swing with vibration of the edges.

swing top

Let's move on to the second part of our experience. Between the ropes at their upper end, insert a round wooden stick with a diameter of one and a half to two centimeters. Then, holding this stick with one hand, with the other hand, begin to rotate the lid hanging horizontally. You need to rotate it for a long time so that the ropes twist well among themselves. When this happens, release the lid. It will begin to rotate in the other direction, and you, gradually increasing the pressure, press the wand on the place where the ropes are twisted. The lid will rotate faster and faster.

Finally, before reaching the very bottom, to the lid, about 20 centimeters, remove the stick from the ropes and swing the ropes as far as possible to the side. You will see that our pendulum now swings in a completely different way than when the lid did not rotate. Now the cover is worn all the time in front of you strictly horizontally. The angle between the lid and the ropes on which it hangs changes all the time from sharp to blunt. A right angle is now obtained only when the ropes pass the vertical position.

swing top

At a high rotation speed, the rope covers twist in the opposite direction, the rotation slows down and stops completely. The pendulum now swings with a randomly dangling cap.

During this experiment, when the pendulum is swinging with the lid rotating rapidly, it became more difficult to make it vibrate by striking it with the hand, as you did when the lid was not rotating.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Gypsy genealogy 17.08.2006

Australian geneticists led by Lyuba Kalaijieva (University of Perth) analyzed gene mutations in almost two thousand gypsies from different European countries. One of the mutations is found, except for the gypsies, only among Pakistanis and Indians.

Judging by the known mutation rate of human genes, carriers of this altered gene appeared in Eastern Europe, passing through Asia, about a thousand years ago. This result coincides with the theories of ethnographers and linguists about the origin of the Gypsies.

Analysis of the rest of the genes shows that about 400 years after the arrival in Eastern Europe, a relatively small group of nomads split into three. One group remained in the Balkans, another went north of the Danube, and a third moved to Western Europe.

Since the Gypsies have not retained any information about their origin, only molecular genetic studies can clarify their history.
