When did the first flags appear?

What is a flag? It is a symbol or sign made of cloth. It can be carried, it can be waved, it can flutter. And it is believed that people who carry or hang out any flag, thus show their belonging to a particular country or organization.

The very idea of the flag probably originated thousands of years ago among ancient hunters and warriors. They wanted to make it so that both friends and enemies could recognize them, in order to know what to be ready for: for a battle or for a friendly meeting. Therefore, the first flags were apparently made from animal skins or bird feathers.

In ancient Egypt, warriors carried a pole, on top of which there was an image of a bird, animal, or some other object. The first flags made of fabric appeared among the Chinese and Indians. It is believed that the Chinese already had cloth flags around 1100 BC. e. Roman soldiers also initially carried images of various animals on poles. And then they also had cloth flags.

During the Middle Ages, flags spread throughout Europe. The crusaders had their flags during the religious wars. Both the royal families and the nobility had their own flags. On these flags were placed the distinctive signs of the genus. The oldest state flag is probably the flag of Denmark, which is a white cross on a red background. According to legend, he appeared in 1219.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why does a drop of water that falls on a weakly heated frying pan evaporate almost instantly, and on a hot frying pan it curls up into a ball and runs over the metal for a long time without changing in size?

A drop of water in a very hot frying pan "floats" on a layer of steam, which serves as a kind of heat-insulating layer.

In addition, the drop at the same time, under the action of surface tension forces, rolls up into a ball, the zone of its contact (and hence the heat exchange) with the hot metal is greatly reduced.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Mobile router with electronic ink screen 31.05.2013

Russian electronics manufacturer Yota Devices has created a 3G/LTE Wi-Fi router that runs on a built-in battery for up to 60 hours. The display shows signal strength and battery charge. The black-and-white screen at the back of the Ruby shows battery charge, signal strength, and the number of devices connected to the router. The advantage of "electronic ink" displays is efficiency: they consume electricity only when the picture is updated.

The router is equipped with a 2100 mAh battery. The battery charges up to 70% in an hour, according to the product page. Ruby promises to be one of the most "long-playing" Yota routers: it can work up to 12 hours if you watch videos on connected devices, up to 24 hours if you are surfing the web, and up to 60 hours in standby mode.

The router is capable of working with GSM, UMTS and LTE networks. With it, you can create both an open (without a password) and a closed Wi-Fi network. Quickly switch from one network to another allows a switch on the Ruby case. The device has a Micro-SIM card slot and a dual connector (USB and micro-USB).

Ruby will be distributed to mobile operators, who will be able to sell it with their service packages. According to Engadget, without carrier discounts, the device costs about $120. Yota Devices has already entered into several agreements with Russian and European operators.

Yota Devices was spun off from the Russian operator Scartel (Yota brand), which provides wireless communication services in Russia using LTE technology. One of the most famous products of Yota Devices is YotaPhone - a smartphone with two screens, color liquid crystal and "electronic ink". It should go on sale in the second half of 2013.
