Germany refuses cars with internal combustion engines

05.10.2016

Germany is actively moving towards reducing the consumption of combustible fuel. First of all, this happens in the country's energy system, but vehicles do not leave the Bundesrat's attention either. The country's government missed a resolution that provides for the imposition of a complete ban on traditional passenger cars equipped with internal combustion engines from 2030.

With the onset of the specified date, buyers will have to buy cars with zero emissions: whether it is an electric car or a car powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Moreover, the Bundesrat asks the European Union to introduce a similar ban on the territory of the entire union state. Given the fact that Germany largely determines the policies and norms for all EU countries, there is a possibility of such a decision.

The German Parliament also wants the European Commission to review the tax policy and its effect on stimulating the zero emission car market. It's not entirely clear what this means. Perhaps Germany wants to increase the tax burden on owners of traditional cars and additional monetary incentives for buyers of "green" cars. But perhaps it's about destroying tax breaks on diesel cars: automakers now fear that tightening emissions standards could simply kill the diesel car market in the EU. If this happens, the average cost of owning a car with an internal combustion engine will increase markedly, which will further stimulate the market to move away from such vehicles.

Demand for diesel vehicles, still on the European market, fell drastically in August in a number of EU countries. There is a real possibility that Volkswagen's emissions scam scandal will have a long-term effect on diesel sales. If we add to this initiatives to tighten harmful emissions for cars and even a complete ban on internal combustion engines in this market, it is quite possible that EU residents will buy predominantly "green" cars very soon.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Mindful sleep preparation helps you fall asleep 06.03.2022

Stress keeps you awake, and many try to cope with this with medications that are not always safe for health. Researchers at the University of Michigan have found that there is another way to get yourself to sleep that is safer and possibly more effective.

Getting ready for sleep, we perform a series of actions: we make the bed, brush our teeth, set the alarm clock, etc. This ritual is repeated every day, and is believed to help the brain calm down and get ready for sleep. However, so far no one has shown directly that there is a causal relationship between the "pre-sleep" ritual and the quality of sleep.

Meanwhile, animals also behave in a certain way before going to bed - just watch a dog or a cat, how they spin in place, trampling a hole in a soft bedding or on a sofa, lick themselves and go through different poses before falling asleep. The researchers decided to observe mice that are preparing to go to sleep, and to observe not only the behavior of the mice themselves, but also the activity of brain neurons. In the hypothalamus, it was possible to find neurons that become active just during the “pre-sleep” ritual. The hypothalamus is a small center in the brain that controls hunger, thirst, metabolism, body temperature, and more, including how the brain sleeps.

If mice that want to sleep are not allowed to nest, the mice will fall asleep for a long time and sleep poorly. And if you suppress the activity of those very neurons in the hypothalamus, then the mice will stop performing the usual “pre-sleep” ritual, and will also begin to fall asleep for a long time and sleep poorly. That is, these neurons, controlling "pre-sleep" behavior, help to fall asleep. From this we can conclude that one should not neglect the evening routine, no matter how lazy it is to go to the bathroom and do what is supposed to. Here it is worth thinking about new, more effective drugs that will specifically act on the neurons of "pre-sleep" behavior - it is possible that they will turn out to be safer than conventional sedatives and sleeping pills.
