What kind of fish lay their eggs for rearing other fish, like cuckoos?

There are several types of fish that hatch fertilized eggs in their mouths. The fish Synodontis multipunctata, or cuckoo catfish, has learned to parasitize on this mechanism. Feeling the smell when its victims spawn, this catfish quickly swims up to them, eats part of the eggs and immediately spawns its own, and then the "foster mother" takes them into her mouth. Moreover, cuckoo catfish fry hatch earlier and eat the remaining native eggs.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Which spiders eat mostly plant foods?

All spiders known to biologists are predators. However, the diet of the Bagheera kiplingi species is 90% plant based. These spiders live on acacias and feed on belt bodies - special structures at the tips of leaves rich in lipids and proteins. Usually, belt corpuscles are included in the diet of ants, which "cultivate" them and protect the plant, and spiders simply steal them. Only during drought Bagheera kiplingi can turn to cannibalism, eating each other.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Electrically conductive gel could help create flexible robots 14.04.2023

Engineers at Carnegie Mellon University have succeeded in combining polymers with liquid metal to develop an organogel composite that is ultra-flexible and highly conductive.

Thanks to the new gel, scientists may be on their way to creating the first truly "soft" robots and self-healing biometric devices. According to the creators, their material is soft and very elastic, with a deformation limit of more than 400%.

To create a composite, the original polymer was immersed in a solvent to achieve plasticity. The resulting polymer base was then mixed with microscopic droplets of a liquid gallium-indium alloy and silver flakes. The end product was a low-density gel-like substance containing enough metal to transmit electricity.

The torn piece of the composite can be reattached, after which it will restore its shape. Its electrical conductivity is superior to any other elastic material, allowing electrical components to be connected without sacrificing functionality.

The main problem with most gel substances is their tendency to dry out, but the developers used ethylene glycol as the base, which has a negligible evaporation rate.

The inventors used their composite to create a snail robot, a toy car, and a biometric monitor. The new composite was used only to connect the battery and motor of the snail robot and proved to be highly maintainable.

In the toy car, the new material made it possible to quickly combine electrical circuits and power the engine and headlights. As a reconfigurable bioelectrode, the material can be used to measure muscle activity using electromyography (EMG) on any part of the body.

Removing the most "rigid" machine components and replacing them with gelled "nervous systems" will allow engineers to create truly flexible robots and devices. This opens up countless possibilities, especially in medicine, where scientists can mimic living organs or create self-healing biometric monitors for the heart and other muscles.

Real soft robots can attach to the skin, crawl on the floor of the house and help the owner in everyday activities.
